What on earth?

Came here expecting to see page after page of optimism, enthusiasm and excitement

I remember reading an article several years back that was waxing poetic about Dan Mullen as a rising star but the little-known secret was that Manny Diaz was the rock of that program.

Manny’s defenses are aggressive and built for big plays. You saw how he turned Miami’s defense from garbage to near-elite in one year. Same thing at Texas in terms of first year results.

Pry’s defenses were very, very good and his productivity will be difficult for anyone to replicate. But everyone complained about our third-down and late-game defenses under Pry. Diaz plays a lot of man and predicated on forcing the QB to throw the ball before ready. That may make us a little more vulnerable to breakdowns but that’s the price to pay for disrupting the offense in critical situations.

Regardless, Diaz is loved by his players and consistently makes big plays on defense which is something CJF has been begging for. Should be a better defense against spread offenses. Run defense I need to think about a little more. But I’ll keep going back to that article I remember reading about Manny Diaz being the reason for Dan Mullen’s success.

Very excited about this hire. Jim Knowles is older and doesn’t recruit. Elijah Robinson doesn’t have the resume for a hire of this magnitude and would be a big risk — we need results NOW, not in 2024 when his recruits would start getting significant PT. Poindexter and John Scott Jr remain in place and they are both very good at their craft. Manny Diaz gives Penn State the best of all worlds and I can’t wait for kickoff. 😎

Two points:

1. Are you really surprised by the negativity here?

2. Your optimism concerns me.

Lincoln didn't build that program he inherited it, he lucked out big time with that Mike Vick esk run by Caleb Williams benching Mr. Rattler. Otherwise
And first time HC Stoops inherited it from what successful big name coach? I’m getting lost here …

One person's thoughts from another board. I think he held back just a little don't you?

Penn State fans take this from a diehard Miami Hurricanes since 3 years old 1993 this coming from me as a fan. You screwed up hiring Mandy Diaz he set your program back. That's right half-man half-girl he pouts and complains when he doesn't get his way Dan Mullens Mississippi State hated his guts bc there was a time he called him a baby. Mack Brown on Texas called him the biggest baby as a coach he was the reason Mack Brown resigned bc of Manny a great winning HC think about that. I heard they had a physical fight after a massacre win by Bob Stoops Sam Bradford Oklahoma. Ladies and gentlemen he had one great year as a defensive coordinator in 2017. Why did he have all Al Golden recruits on defense after we fired Al? Some were 4 to a 5-star talent that's why we were winning! It was a fluke year we went to the ACC championship against Clemson. Dabo Sweeney had other plans he exposed Mandy Diaz defense this a bad hiring take it from me I can’t stand looking at Mandy Diaz face or hearing this fool talk I couldn't wait for Miami to fire him look it he turned his back on Temple who I thought would be a great fit for him bc he could do what he wants knowing small program he a big baby anyways terrible hire by Penn State.

I say give him a chance.
Mack Brown resigned because of a coach he fired earlier in the season? Sure, sounds totally reasonable. It couldn't have anything to do with the fact that Brown's teams had gone 30-21 his last four years at a program whose boosters have deep pockets and no tolerance 4/5 seasons loss. Diaz wasn't good at MSU, and the HC hated him, yet Brown decided to hire a bad DC "baby" at Texas when he was coming off a 5-7 year. That sounds equally reasonable.

28 head coaching positions open this year FBS.
11 positions filled by Head Coaches or AHC at FBS programs.
6 positions filled by Offensive coordinators at FBS programs.
8 positions filled by Defensive coordinators at FBS programs
1 filled by a retired HC.
2 positions remain open.

As of now i estimate 11 coordinator positions are open with 7 being on the defense, we got a good coach, who will help with the Linebacker position.
Update 9 positions filled by Defensive Coordinators - Ga. DC to Oregon
1 position left Temple
As a side note as of now 22 defensive coordinator positions need to be filled in FBS.

Poindexter will be calling plays for bowl game and Diaz will take over after that. I’m sure Diaz will help game plan and development.

I wasn’t sure if there were rules about adding a coach mid-season or for a bowl game. On the other hand, if a coach leaves before a bowl game, it seems reasonable to get a replacement for that game, in some capacity.

I think you still have to abide by the limit for coaches that interact with players. Since Pry left, Diaz would be replacing him.

Conveniently overlooks Diaz's second year at UT where his defenses surrendered an average of 404 yards and about 30 points a game (that considering that the Longhorns played their share of tomato cans). Then there was has abortive third year where his D gave up 679 yards to BYU, 550 on the ground. Fired after that monstrosity.

The last vestiges of honor left in 2011.

Did you watch the Illinois game? Pry got a promotion and a handsome raise to HC after that deal. Were you happy with Pry, Art?
PSU gave Pry a promotion and handsome raise after the Illinois game? I must have missed that.

Ah, belatedly making the connection. (Yes, I now recall Art saying “this is me” but his choice of new handle didn’t quite compute. Something along the lines of “@ Very Nice PSU Fan” would have been more fitting, one would think.)
