Did his mom get back to you guys yet?
Now this is funny and reminds me of a story. A good friend of mine is a Director of Logistics for an S&P 30 company. About 3 years ago she had made a written offer for a position to a new college grad. A few days later she received a phone call from the kids mother asking for clarification about the health insurance. She told the mother that she was sorry but she thought she hiring an adult and told the mother to inform her son that the offer was being rescinded and the paperwork would go out that day. Said good day and hung up. I often wonder how that mother broke the news.

Kids today see jobs very differently. They (largely) don’t believe they are defined by their work and the only questions I routinely got involved work life balance. The work from home and flexibility has many getting up at noon and doing their work after hours ( saying they still get their work done). Even the titans of industry are very different. I had a co worker who left and was a direct report to Bill Gates. If he was up at 4:00 AM and he had a question, you were on the clock. I have a friend whose daughter worked for Musk’s brother and he made Elon look like Henry Ford. The stories I heard about their annual parties where they hired the best chefs in the world to do the food would have been rated XXX if they filmed them. If you are a kid with a modicum of work ethic, you can really stand out today.

This seems to reflect poorly on engineering students (perish the thought!), students of a certain age, Drexel students, or some combination of the three. This sounds almost too staged to be true; still, I don’t know why you bothered with the interview given he was an hour late.
The thought crossed my mind also. Maybe he thought being so off the wall unconventional in his approach might peak their interest. If so, a big gamble that failed.

Was this supposed college student pranking the interviewer or recording the event for YouTube or some social media platform? Doesn’t sound real to me. If this is the state of what recent college graduates are in the current market? If so, this country is in big trouble!
The country may be in trouble but good grads will have a field day.

This just happened this afternoon and I need to rant....

We are interviewing engineering students for internships and also for Co - op programs. We have a relationship with Drexel University, and so we get engineering students for co-op programs. We have one of our junior staff go through the process, but with a senior staff providing guidance.

Kid has an interview scheduled for 130 PM. 1:45 rolls around and he is not here. So, the junior staff member calls him to see if he is coming, late, car broke down, whatever. Kid responds "I just woke up. Do we really have to do this - can't you guys just give me the job?"

Of course, the answer is "no". The staff member hangs up the phone, and informs the senior staff - so the decision is - cancel it and look for another candidate.

Kid shows up at 2:30 - baseball hat on (backwards), jeans, sneakers, t-shirt and jacket. With a cup of Starbucks in his hand. For reasons lost on me, they decide to interview him....I am in the next office. Asking simple questions pertaining to the pursuit of his degree.....his responses were one word answers, mostly consisting of "yeah" or "nah". Nothing substantive even when he was asked to elaborate. As part of the process, they walk him around our office - showing him the cubicles, lunch room, offices of senior staff. He asks how long he has to be here before he gets an office - so he can shut the door and sleep. He assumes it's a short time frame. Our junior staff said he has been here for three years and he still only has a cubical. To which the kid said "Whoa, dude....you should sue. They are not stimulating your professional experience". He goes on to explain how our junior staff is being stymied professionally, and he should check out options to get back at the company for keeping him from being a success.

So, the interview is over and they walk the kid to the door and he says "Can I start in mid January- I want to go skiing in Colorado". To which they said "We will get back to you".

They tore up his resume once the door was shut.

I realize I am an old fuddy duddy, and I hate kids on my lawn....but sweet black Jesus, this kid was a f*cking piece of work.

Ok - rant over.
Give the kid a trophy for participating.

I’m not usually one for the “oh my God, these kids today” discussions, but I did have a doozy a few weeks ago. Called Primo Hoagies to place an order…

Me: “I’d like to order a two foot Italian sub”.

Girl on phone: “I’m sorry, but our only sizes are 6 inches, 9 inches, and 24 inches”.

Me: after a pause for 5 seconds, “umm…I guess I’ll do the 24 inch sub”

Her: “Sure, would you like oil, vinegar…”

I mean, wow.
Erial, you do understand a two foot sub is not on the menu.

That’s ok. Back in the day I worked for the survey company 3 man crew. I was third in line
The crew leader said we had to stake something out in yards
But first needed to figure out how many feet in a yard
#2 said ‘don’t it matter if it’s the front of back yard’?
I said why don’t we just use 3.
#1 asked if I was sure. I assured him I was.
we went w 3

Spent nearly 5 years on all ends of a survey crew before going to the railroad. Fun times.

I got hired and sent out of town without ever knowing specifically what I'd be doing. First morning in the parking lot I asked what I'd be doing. They handled me a pole and asked if I could keep it level. I did, so they said I was good.

Agreeing to interview him after he overslept and expressed no remorse over it was a mistake. You already had all the information you needed to make a decision on this candidate.
This ^^^^. He should have been sent on his way by phone. Then, after he shows up in jeans and a tshirt, he should have been shown the door and told his interview was over and his application was rejected.

Based on your user name we might go to the same Primos. If so I can confirm previous not so good experiences there. I stick with Aversa’s now

Based on that comment, I’m sure that it is.

I like Aversas a lot, but they just close too early. If I’m ordering out or picking up a sub, it’s usually after kid’s sports or something like that and definitely too late for Aversas (but I will swing over there for lunch every now and then). I’ve probably had Primo 10-12 times and never had an issue with the quality…however, it often takes a lot longer than it should.

Yea we use them and Scarpinattos a lot for food for parties. Totally get what you mean about the hours. I do liscios hoagie trays sometimes too. If you ever see an SUV with PSU stuff on it going around traffic circles too many times bc I can’t get the exit right it’s probably me, still getting used to these jersey roads 😂have a great night!

Ask any of these numb nuts what happened on September 11 2001 and they will give you a dumb look.
So glad my kids’ elementary school does a lot for 9/11. I have been very pleasantly surprised. My daughter came home asking questions about Pearl Harbor today. Not sure how much detail they went into but at least it was addressed (this is 4th grade)

Jersey roads...NO LEFT TURNS!? Driving a mile past where you want to go is maddening. Then missing the proper traffic circle and having to drive another mile, loop around, then drive 2-3 back the other direction only to repeat this again....F that place and it's crappy roads.

I know I sound like an old crank too but I'm hearing stories like this from multiple different sources. This generation of Millenials, Generation Z or whatever they call themselves are a different breed. These are the people who will be doing maintenance on your car, building a power grid for the 21st century and delivering all the groceries to your supermarket. People blame shortages of toilet paper, coins and everything else on COVID but I think there is lot more to it than that.

I was in social work for ten years, it was a mess. I got stuck with all of the hardest and court involved cases because I actually did my job and could be counted on to be there. Finally after having my first child I realized it wasn’t worth it anymore, emotionally or financially. Stayed home for eight years while the kids were young and now I’m in education. Now we are stretched so thin because no one is applying for crucial support and paraprofessional jobs. You get more money substitute teaching on a daily basis than in a full time para position but there are major shortages there as well. My neighbor graduated a year ago and always asks me for job suggestions that have good hours. She has a bachelors in psych and no immediate plans for grad school. I suggested applying to the school district in a paraprofessional role or sub teaching. she refuses because she doesn’t want to get vaccinated. I explained that if she doesn’t want to get vaccinated she just has to get a test once a week which our district pays for. Still a firm No and refuses to work retail or other jobs she feels are beneath her because she has a degree. Must be nice to have the luxury to sit home all day at the age of 22. Ugh
And thats one of the MAIN reasons we have what we have today. there is NOT ENOUGH PAIN nor PRIDE different subject but related

The ones we see fresh out of college want to sit on their butts in front of a computer and start at $150k.
Yes you are Correct...and that Engineering candidate student the OP shared--he thinks he has Leverage--Engineering Degree so they need me--I am in short supply...wow did he over play his hand--then what he will tell everyone including family is a lie--Didn't like the company--wasn't paying enough etc..He wont look himself in the mirror and say I F'ed up....and thats the problem.

My industry--Cyber Security Software. All these young people want immediate Strategic key positions like you stated--the Marketing EEs with 2-4 years experience (25-28yr olds) want to help the Chief Marketing Officer with Strategy and not on the execution parts (the hard parts the work etc.) In Sales the Business Development Reps (Inside Sales) want my type of job---they think--Phone call--Demo-Proposal-Close that easy....well for me lol but I been selling since I graduated PSU in 96'. No not quite that easy lol-- they come from Trophy generation entitlement, instant gratification world...We all had newspaper routes, lawn jobs, etc...understood what $1 and $5 meant.

The kids we hire today are very bright and hard working. They do value life balance and today's job market provides unlimited opportunities for them to change jobs for ever increasing compensation. Working from home has not been helpful re retention. If part of what your Company offers is an excellent culture, they are not getting a chance to experience and value that culture. We are also seeing our female census growing partly due to our recruiting path but also because they are more often than not the better, more mature candidate.

Agree with all your Points---been working remote since 2010--people thinks its a privelage, kind of but I produce $Million+ a year in software sales =Keep my job.

Prior to the pandemic a lot of F500 companies were changing their offices--I mean full floor renovations, millions to do. I have a few large name brand clients you all know and have either cruised on or rented their cars ;) Walking through you see all the cubes being ripped down and the Glass offices and on each floor common areas with the cool beverage machines, fooz ball, ping pong tables, multi-colored bean bag sacks..weird....like Google basically what you see shown in the movies with Silicon valley.. the reasoning from both companies "We need to look appealing to hire this generation of talent" Really? I guess each is own...I care about other things...to me those things arent tangible and dont care....

Burger King circa 2005. They are doing Star Wars figures in their kids meals and my son is collecting them. Some of them are harder to find than others. This Burger King we happen upon has five of the figures my son doesn't have.

Ask if I can just buy the toys instead of the meals, as I had done that at other Burger Kings. Manager says no, that is not their policy. Ok...ill take 5 kids meals, just don't bother making the meals.

He calls the cashier over and explains it to him. Kid nods his head.
Rings me up, and asks "You want hamburgers or cheeseburgers"
Me: I just want the toys
Him: manager said you have to buy the meals
Me: I'll pay for the meals, I just want the toys
Him: what am I supposed to do with the food
Me: don't make it
Him: but the manager said you have to buy it
Me: fine...make it. You can eat it.
Him: man, I can't eat 5 hamburgers
Me: just throw away what you can't eat
Him: <nods head> What drinks do you want with those
Me: <Slaps forehead> Just gimme 5 hamburger kids meals with cokes.

Then he proceeded to watch me pull 5 toys out of the boxes and pitch 4 perfectly good meals in the trash....there was one other family in line and they gladly accepted the free kids meal

Work ethic is out the window…you can see this in how they vote/their expectations from society. Chinese licking their chops…expect to see them zooming by on the left if this trend is not quickly reversed.

I really do work in jeans and a tee in the summer, and usually a fleece pullover in the winter, so I have greater latitude on clothing choice. The main requirement is that they be clean and timely. I’d much rather have an engaged, energetic thinker on my team than a well-dressed, book smart model that was spoon fed and regurgitates.

If you don’t show evidence that you can operate off a paved road with guardrails you won’t get an offer.

You don’t need to look to the Chinese. The change will be from within the borders of this country. But it may be the only option this country has from keeping the Chinese from zooming by on the left because Anerica is giving itself away.

I agree with your comment in how people vote-but I may be looking at it from the other side of the road 😉

I remember you posting this story before

So, a follow up.

A phone call was made to the university regarding the applicant. Suffice to say, apologies were profusely offered for his behaviour. As of this post, however, his mom or dad has not contacted us demanding he be hired.

My experience is that it is a mixed bag, and I wonder if previous generations didn't observe something similar - many of the next generation get it, and many don't. I had great experiences with many young professionals who were hard working, smart, eager to learn, and creative. My experience mirror's your company's - it was easier to find quality female employees and candidates than male. As a group, they were more mature and better prepared than their male counterparts.

There is a significant portion of the population that fits all the classic negative stereotypes. One of the biggest challenges is that many of this group struggle with the idea of choices and consequences for those choices. I had multiple experiences with employees (and heard of more) who were upset when an employee who was taking on extra assignments and /or pursuing additional knowledge and skills was recognized and promoted over them. The theme was "that's not fair, if I did what they did I wouldn't have time for..." The problem wasn't that they wanted to have a social life, pursue hobbies, or whatever, it was that they did not understand that both they and their colleagues had made choices and were experiencing the good and bad that went with the choices. They wanted the benefit of a lifestyle they had chosen while also receiving the benefit of a lifestyle they hadn't chosen, fully expecting their employer to go along.
