But what difference does it make what we as fans think? We’re not making any decisions. All we can do is watch the games and hope for a win and if we get the win, then that’s all that matters from our standpoint. If, as a fan, all you can do is watch every week and complain every week because the team isn’t living up to your expectations, then maybe college football shouldn’t be your thing.
Ah, the old "you can't do anything about it so why bother" argument.

I had a discussion about the situation in the Middle East at lunch today with a friend. What am I doing about that?

Its a Penn State Football discussion board, and I am having a discussion about Penn State football. It's world gone mad.

Must have been a lousy lunch and/or a bad friend. You couldn’t pay me to talk about the Middle East, especially on a Saturday, during football season.

Call me old fashioned but I will take an ugly win over a pretty loss every time. Ask Oklahoma.
Jesus effing Christos. Nice straw man.

Nobody. And I mean nobody, would rather have lost today.

That was not the point of my post at all.....

Does today's win point towards improvements and lessons learned from the Ohio State loss? That was my bar.

If your bar was hanging on to win against a team that lost to Rutgres.....I'm really happy for you.

Oh I don’t know Allar pretty well today IMO despite repeated breakdowns by the offensive line. He also threw a perfect ball for a TD with the game on the line.
And our WR1 dropped a nice pass in the red zone on 3rd down.

I have no problem with anyone discussing Penn State football…it’s the constant criticisms and doomsday posts that drive me crazy. Again, if you don’t enjoy it, why do it? When I get to the point where I’m ticked off after a win, I’ll find something else to do with my time.

Please show me one college football team in history that got better every single game. That’s not how this works. You have good weeks and bad weeks…hopefully you can pull out wins when you have a bad week. You will always have players having an off day at certain times…that may be the first game of the year, the sixth game, or the last game of the season. That’s what happens when you’re dealing with human beings.

So, Ludd, respectfully, you've chosen to be a certain "type" of fan, and you're telling me I should be that type of fan as well.

I've run the gamut in my 40+ years of Penn State fandom, from blind, ray rah sis boom bah rooting for the team (remember 1988?) to saying we should fire Joe in 2004.

Right now, I'm straddling the fence a little. I'm not in the "fire Franklin" crowd, but I honestly think he has reached his ceiling. So I lay out some criticisms.... not because I think I can change anything, but because I enjoy discussions, even passionate ones, with my fellow Penn State fans.

In terms of time... being brutally honest.... pre-kids, I cared a lot more. These days, Penn State football is maybe 5% of my life, so whether I'm happy or sad about it, it's hardly moving the needle for me.

Another straw man. Didn't say we should see improvement every week. Just after a fairly weak performance against OSU last week, was hoping to see a some signs of improvement against a pretty bad defense.

I too have run that gamut in my fan hood. I used to let a loss bother me for days. Now, I watch every game and hope we win. If we do, then I’m happy. If we don’t, I’m bummed for a short period of time. The biggest thing that changed me was when I started coaching. Doing that is quite a reality check and makes you realize that good and bad things happen and that will never change.

We lost last week and we won this week, that’s improvement. Allar wasn’t great today, but he was better than last week, that’s improvement. Kaytron played better today, that’s improvement. We had no long pass plays last week, but we did today, that’s improvement. If you look for it, you can find it.

So why did Drew look a ton more comfortable last year and he looks like a skittish deer this year? The line has roughly the same players and with the exception of one WR & TE off to the NFL , his receiving/TE corps is roughly the same. He has to show this attitude that he's a 5-star and he's gonna prove it on the field. The QB I've seen for a lot of the season is a 2nd stringer at best.
He didn’t play last year and now he has been scouted. You can throw all sorts of confusing defensive sequences at him that he has never seen before. Had he played last year, he would have gotten to see more of this. He is coming around, needs more time.

How do you know it would have made any difference in the world? His best game of the year was his first game, so that pretty much proves your theory false.
What are you talking about? Of course his first game was his best, no one had really seen him. This guy went from hs football to the big ten. That’s a sea change. When we lost to OSU and Michigan last year there was a decision to play Sean and win now or play for next year with Drew. They picked Sean. That’s fine, but you can’t now complain that Drew looks like crap when Sean got 6 years here and Drew got 8 games. Give Drew another 48 more games and see what he turns into. I see progress with him, but he needs to play more. He needs to see defenses and how coaches are scouting him. He isn’t a savant. He needs to learn his trade, which wasn’t going to happen sitting him on the bench, but it is what it is.

Without Chop in there playing, this defense has lost it's emotional leader. They look lost and uninspired. In fact, the whole team on both sides of the ball look lost and uninspired.

I don’t like Allen, but at least he’s involved in the game……Franklin looks like a Zombie on the sideline.

Fortunately I got a tee time at 12:50 at a golf club that I normally don’t get to play and played well . Sounds like a total sheet show . ⛳️ 🍺

We have no signs…..that would require a game plan!
PSU fakes tempo every series and never does it. Standing straight up running backs at handoff. As Midnighter mentioned, CJF paws are all over this offense…
Btw, I never, ever enter this Gameday thread and post for obvious reasons, but come on CJF…

He played a lot last year and if he has gotten worse this year because teams have now seen him more, then how would giving them more tape on him last year help him this year? Your argument makes no sense.

He threw 60 total passes in 2022. He threw 42 at OSU last week. He didn’t play last year.

Drew is trying to fly the airplane while it is still being built. Let him play last year and now he is at least used to the speed and reading defenses. Yeah he would have been scouted, but he would have an entire off season to work on things. Now he is trying read defenses, get up to game speed, and adjust to the changes the scouts are throwing at him. That happens every week. Rather difficult when you don’t have a Harrison who makes you look like a brilliant field general.
