That is… incorrect.

Not positive, but that Ill defense looks like a defense that has no fear of any PSU WR who can get separation against the d backs. So Sell out to stop the run and generate a pass rush while you are at it. Drew isn’t mobile, so go get him. Coaching staff is going to see that again when the opposing team doesn’t gift you 5 turnovers; better make some plans.

You quote a post that I didn’t type. I am not blaming the coaches for everything. Read my original response.

I cite a lax culture and dumb penalties. Iffy (at best) play calls on offense. And a consistent inability to compete against OSU and UM when they have similar or better talent.

I’m not sure who typed what you quoted but it wasn’t me. I don’t begrudge your analysis skills.
We had some dumb penalties today and a couple of them were ticky tack calls. That doesn’t point to a culture. In fact, we usually have very few penalties. And I’m sure Franklin will address those penalties.
All play calls look iffy if they don’t work, but that doesn’t mean they were bad calls. If the players don’t execute, it’s not the play call. And it’s been a while since we’ve played OSU or Michigan with better talent.

Yup. Pass plays were also generally poorly called. No shots down field. Got the #1 QB recruit in the country, and they didn’t put him in position to do anything. Way too conservative today.
Or the receivers didn’t get open.

Your observations regarding this staff are spot on. Any thoughts about Pribula as a #2 and successor QB.

I just don’t see it…he’s a less talented version of Trace
RS Frosh. Lacks experience. Hopefully, he stays and they can coach him up.
”Your house hasn’t fallen down, Mr. Johnson, but we did find—“

“Nope! That’s all I needed to know! House didn’t fall down. End of story!”

“Well, but there are some significant—“

“Nope! Don’t wanna hear it!”

That’s your logic. That’s your understanding of the game.

Mmmm… possibly. But do we believe Illinois has that kind of secondary? They were stacking 8 in the box to stop the run.

This game had the distinct look of Illinois daring Penn State to throw the ball, and Franklin stubbornly insisting on forcing the run because— let’s face it: opponents KNOW that’s what he does.

A 30-13 win over a conference opponent on the road doesn’t point to the house falling down. It points to a paint chip on the back door.

Coaching always looks poor when the players don’t execute. And coaching from the couch after the fact is never wrong.
No, constantly running up the middle, not running slants, running only 1 screen play all day, not taking shots down field, not returning to things that are successful… that’s what makes coaching look poor.

That’s not what he does, he usually has a pretty even spread between passing and running. And we were running the ball at over 4 yards a carry, not too bad. Receivers dropping the ball and Drew over throwing passes was what hurt our offense more than play calling.

Over throwing passes and dropping passes makes coaching look poor.

I don’t make a living from football and I’m a 100% fan and not an analyst. I don’t pretend to be…thus posting on a total fan board.

Pribula is tough to evaluate right now. 1. He’s often playing with the twos. That’s a big talent drop. 2. He clearly isn’t the natural passer that Allar is. He’s more of a scrapper like Trace and Sean. It’s reasonable for him to need more developmental time and I think that’s why the staff is trying to get him game reps.

Another game where Penn State pLayed down to the level of their competition. I was hoping they would get that of their system.
At least they pulled away in the second half and won. At one point, they had a +4 turnover differential and were only up 16-7. I wouldn’t have believed you before the game if you’d given me that stat.

Apparently not here. Forget the W-L. I guess it’s all about the ‘eye test’ or stats or whatever stupid metric that apparently is more important than if PSU scored more than the other team.
The reason for that is that Illinois isn’t the bar. OSU and Michigan are. Fans want to see a team that appears able to compete with those teams week in and out. Today was not an example of that, but they pulled away and took care of business. Great seasons have a couple of these games. Ex: Northwestern in 2005.

I’m not reading through this thread because I don’t want to and I typically don’t. But I will share these thoughts:
1) Happy with a road win with an 11AM kickoff.
2) Happy the coaches continued to try to pound it inside the tackles. It’s good to face some adversity and have to learn to fight for some yards.
3) Glad Allar face some adversity. It’s not going to be easy against OSU and Michigan. Good to have something to learn from.
4) For all the hand wringing I’m sure is going on today about the offense, I’m very pleased with the defense.
5) Our WRs are going to be a real problem against the better teams.

If it weren’t for some dumb penalties today we would have cruised. The holding call and the unsportsmanlike conduct in particular along with the motion penalty that took us from 3rd and 1 to 3rd and 6 were drive killers. Correct these and it’s a blow out. As it was we won easily anyway, just uglier than it should have been.

Fortunately IL badly underthrew a ball inside the PSU 10 to a receiver that was behind our secondary. I hate to think how the Illinois D would have played if they had gotten an early lead (this was I think IL’s second possession).

Judge then based upon their WIN or loss against those teams when they play them! It’s not about, ‘hey we looked GREAT against IUP today. Bring on the suckeyes!’

I'm always 'happy' with a win, and a road BIG win in particular.

That said, everyone needs to adjust their expectations of this team. I keep hearing announcers and fans talking about how we are now ready to 'compete against the big 2' and head off to the CFB championship playoff. Not unless there's a bunch of major miracles.

Shaky kicking game (2 kicks at least partially blocked today!), a rookie QB, a D front that is not strong against the inside zone run game, WRs that struggle to get separation, and STILL shaky OL play will cost this team at least 2 games, and likely 3.

None of that means that the coaches aren't good coaches, the kids are bad kids, or anything. It's just really hard to compete in what is likely the toughest division in CFB with a rookie calling the signals. You need all of the other parts of the team to be absolutely dominating if you're going to go all the way with some of the holes this team has.

It seems that the recipe for other teams to f*ck us in the a$$ is the following:

On defense, stack the line of scrimmage and force the young QB to beat you (with some WRs who are still question marks).

On offense, run the ball down our throats since our defensive line is UNDERSIZED. o_O .

Nothing really new. 😞
