It seems that the recipe for other teams to f*ck us in the a$$ is the following:

On defense, stack the line of scrimmage and force the young QB to beat you (with some WRs who are still question marks).

On offense, run the ball down our throats since our defensive line is UNDERSIZED. o_O .

Nothing really new. 😞
It’s amazing we ever win a game.

Not positive, but that Ill defense looks like a defense that has no fear of any PSU WR who can get separation against the d backs. So Sell out to stop the run and generate a pass rush while you are at it. Drew isn’t mobile, so go get him. Coaching staff is going to see that again when the opposing team doesn’t gift you 5 turnovers; better make some plans.
Only 40 points when you have 5-0 turnover advantage? Not good.

Too many mistakes. Allar will be better at home. But this road show will not work against a real team. Disappointing but getting more predictable.

We had some dumb penalties today and a couple of them were ticky tack calls. That doesn’t point to a culture. In fact, we usually have very few penalties. And I’m sure Franklin will address those penalties.
All play calls look iffy if they don’t work, but that doesn’t mean they were bad calls. If the players don’t execute, it’s not the play call. And it’s been a while since we’ve played OSU or Michigan with better talent.
And it will continue to be a while. We have athletes. They have athletes but more football players.

If wildly outcoached means you’re up by 23 points in the 4th quarter and looking to score more, sign me up every week! Do we have to win by 50 to satisfy many of you? 60? Allow negative yards and score on every single offensive play? You guys are delusional.
How about play a relative sound game…?

We have a hugely talented true soph QB who isn't yet quite ready for prime time- but he will be- he's only 2 1/2 games in.

When he is, this team will be just fine. Relax and enjoy the ride.
This year? Got a Loooooong way to go.

Luckily our schedule seems to have gotten much easier …but not nearly good enough to compete against O$U and Michigan.

How did this team regress so much after Rose Bowl?

comments:

1. Olu should hide that game from NFL scouts. A bit surprising that we couldn’t generate any sort of consistent rushing push behind him. I also have similar concerns with our center. He doesn’t look comfortable out there.

2. Seemed to have mostly solved our FG issues.

3. bielema is a good, seasoned coach. He just seems to be able to get his guys up to play us. I think our slow developing run offense that needs Saquon to make it work plays right into his hands, but give Ill credit for not rolling over.

4. I would not want to be a QB rolling out of the pocket and seeing Carter flying up to crack me. that ball is getting released real quick. I wouldn’t mind an early roughing the passer penalty against him every game. Let that QB think twice about holding onto the ball.

5. Drew got frustrated today, but he didn’t fold or start making ill-advised gun slinger throws. Eventually he and the staff are going to have to stretch the field and make plays, regardless of the separation abilities of our TEs and WRs or the pass blocking ability of our o-line. See QB play in Colorado vs. Colorado St. game. Perhaps he isn’t there yet, but I think the offense stays clunky until he makes the next evolution.

I only had spotty radio and just for the first half (no wifi in FC Barcelona’s stadium…and odd seats were on one side, even seats on the other — I felt right at home!) but it seems like McClain had a pair of drops and the throw to Allen on the 2nd T play was there and he couldn’t haul it in. Players gotta make plays. They also have to stop being dumb - Ellies unsportsmanlike, DLS personal foul, pre-snap penalties - that’s what will cost you big against teams who don’t give the ball away. I’d agree that it’s troubling that the o-line has struggled in the first 3 games in that it’s 3 yards & cloud of dust territory vs big holes for chunk plays.

But for a road nooner that Franklin teams notoriously muddle through, I’ll happily take this defensive effort and the W. Looking across the college football landscape, a lot of bubbles got burst and a ton of ??? are being raised. I’m good with cruising just below the surface. On to the next!

Some good points - it was actually 11 am local.time.

Some terrible drops, dumb penalties and Allar missed a wide open receiver for a sure TD.

The run game struggled all day, concerning for sure.

But still a B1G road win against a team that always Penn State tough.

Because OSU and Michigan have looked flawless in all their games. I’m quite sure OSU is worried just as much about playing us after the way they’ve looked.

I said this would be a 'frustrating win' and it was (but, winning by 17 on the road in the B1G isn't too shabby). Need to, obviously, clean some things up (tackling is still mind bogglingly, ahem, hit or miss; and of course, drops) but I do think we're still not showing much given the talent disparity between our us and our first three opponents. Want to keep Allar happy and confident. Iowa for the White Out will be huge but I think we'll dust them pretty good to be honest.

I never understood the Olu as top five pick - where did that come from? When I hear about top five OL/OT picks I think Ogden, Pace, Boselli, Jones - just pure dominance (three of those guys are HOFers - Boselli maybe next). I have never seen that from Fashanu - must be missing something.

Anyway, can't wait for Saturday - we don't have a full day of kid stuff and can actually enjoy the game.

Fashanu is loved by the NFL as his strength is pass pro in a pass happy league. He's certainly not a mauler out there at LT, but he's still young and his athleticism is pretty good. I think I picked by 10 or so as people forget even with a good team that road wins in the conference don't tend to be walkovers from the start. This is a really good PSU team, but this push for them for be great that the media is harping on is lacking up the middle on D and the interior OL simply is not a dominant one, they just aren't. They are a slightly above average OL with 2 really good RB's.

We also got to see some of the maturation process that we were hoping to avoid with Drew and the WR's. Some throws were simply off, high, or behind the WR's. Then there were a couple drops will again occur every year. It took PSU 4-5 games to get on track in the 2016 season and hopefully that clicks soon for this O. Bottom line is you got a good road test for your young QB and pretty much dominated the game, but need to tighten up on O. Outside of the blocked FG there has been progress in the FG unit from game one. The punting game is hard to watch though....just no height and the returners are getting time to setup a return. That will bite this team in the arse sooner or later IMO.

Got the W, get Iowa at home for the whiteout and move to 4-0 next week as I don't think Iowa can score enough in a whiteout to stay with PSU.

For one....it's not the same team.

Elite fans have an obligation to be disappointed and dissatisfied with a less than perfect performance. They depend on us to force them to improve.

On the play Allar missed a wide open KLS downfield, I distinctly remember seeing the replay and thinking Drew is still a little too uncomfortable with his pass protection. That miss is indicative of a need for growth in his composure every bit as much as a need for the line to simply execute better.

people are forgetting that was his third start, not his twenty third.

Was that the play Klatt went on and on about? If you watch the replay, look at the passing lanes. Allar would have had to look over several OL who were bunched up in the line of his view.

Not it at all IMO. This idea PSU will go out and dominate every team on the road is fantasy for those who bought into all the hype. Yes there are things to clean up clearly on O, but this notion teams are going to wilt and fall to the mighty PSU is a joke. Not to mention anyone who thinks this team has A+ potential up the middle on both sides of the ball is literally on crack. Neither the OL or DL is dominant on the interior. I'm not sure how many games people need to see before they realize it, but this team IMO just isn't a dominant team in those 2 areas.

The WR's are good, but not going to blow anyone away or scare teams. That doesn't mean PSU cannot pull off an upset @tOSU or at home against UM because they can with some breaks....but I'm not seeing this team bullying anyone decent up the middle. When you win by 17 on the road and you weren't at your best it means things aren't as dire as some folks like to make it either.

We means you...you certainly should do your best whatever course you take. It will be reflected on your transcript. However, you are not on the Penn State Football team. I'm concerned you don't see the difference.

That would only be an accurate comparison if the algebra teacher were changing the questions as you were taking the test, trying to make sure you missed every question. Some posters often forget there are two teams playing every game and the other team is trying to stop PSU from doing what they do.
