Orrrrr, you can look at it for exactly what it was -- first game of the season with question marks in a lot of places in a hostile road environment at night and they found a way to win.And herein lies the issue. Yurcich doesn't do enough mixing up....they could have shredded Purdue defense with crossing routes all night How about a screen or pitchout to our RBs? At least a crappy win is better than a crappy loss. Lots to improve on....some good.
If the grounded pass to the Purdue TE was allowed to stand, I think this would have been a loss.

Seems like they forced the run on early downs. Needs to mix it up better IMO.
I really like Clifford - seems like a really good young man....but JC he makes you pull your hair out at times. I'm really happy for him when he plays well.

I can't help but to think a lot of the problem was the play calling. We mostly ran between the tackles and dropped back in the pocket to pass.
The last drive had QB rollout, WR screens, misdirection, TE, RB out of the backfield, etc. Much better tempo.
Lucky to win this. I don’t have a good feeling about this season. Hopefully I eat my words at the end.

It was almost like they changed their offense on that last drive. Uptempo and opened up the playbook.

I think our receivers didn’t do us any favors but I saw a lot of good things tonight. We beat a good team on the road in a tough environment. The young backs played well. The offense was much more diverse with plays under center, qb sneak for TD, and a comeback TD drive late in the 4th qtr. except for the boneheaded pick 6, Clifford performed well. Allar looked poised when he had to come in. The defense did what it needed to do against an excellent passing attack. Remember we won with a 4th quarter comeback. How often have those games gone the other way? Not tonight…. We are 1-0
A logical question might be, “why was the play calling awful until late?”
It seemed like Diaz had the chains taken off starting around 6 mins left. The D was night and day more effective after that.
I don’t understand why it takes 45 minutes to settle into a groove.

Lot of substitution on the OL as well.
I saw glimmers Of promise in the two tailbacks. There is something there to build upon for sure. Each one of those guys will have a big game this year, maybe even in the same game.
