Honestly I don't know who we would hire and I don't know if they would get better results. What i 100% know is that James has proved that he cannot beat OSU or Michigan consistently and get us where we need to be. But we either need to try something different or be content with being a middle tier football school. My fear is that the Administrations is 100% content with that.

1) Lure hire Addazio away from TAMU to be the new OL coach ($$$)

2) Fire or demote Trautwein

3) Retain Yurcich with performance contingencies

4) Bytch slap Franklin upside the head and tell him that his goofy offensive preferences/input are highly offensive and that he will have no, none, zero, zada and zilch input into offensive game planning. I can see Addazio beating the living shyft out of Fraudklin for (a) being fundamentally stupid, and (b) attempting to interfere in aspects of football for which he he is seriously ignorant.

5) If you don't like my plan, I'd say go with @ILLINOISLION 's recommendation on Leipold. Proven winner

Hartline. Then you put the apprentice up against the master every year. Hartline has a proven track record as a position coach and recruiter, and he's first time OC this year. Worked under Meyer and Day, knows the Big Ten, and knows everything lacking at Penn State. He can bring LJ too.

We keep CJF for recruiting, creating a positive atmosphere, working effectively with often difficult families, being 'the face' of the football program. Then we bring in a motivator, tough love game day coach. Pick one...he only has to show up on Saturdays and yell a lot.

I understand the point of the OP, “who then”…..but then I’d ask you what do you think of coach who goes for it on 4th and real long in the opponents territory down just 7 with over 7 to play and your offense has done absolutely nothing? Who does that? That’s really basic jr high school football stuff. Dumb dumb dumb. People are tired of it. He’s not a big game big time coach.

That’s not a bad idea. I’m not on the fire Franklin bandwagon, but that is an interesting idea.

There has to be accountability. CJF isn’t going anywhere soon. So, the AD needs to make it clear that this shite ain’t gonna fly. I respect the heck out of how he’s been as a recruiter and for preparing the players beyond college. However, he still freezes in the big games at OSU and at UM. Why?? AD needs to address this issue with him. Otherwise, expect the same year after year— and add at Washington, Oregon, USC etc…..

To be fair, we’ve largely been a middle tier football school since the late 90’s/early 2000’s with a nice breakthrough year every now and then (2005, 2008, 2016).

Yesterday was a really ugly loss, there is no improvement in sight, and you want a new coach. OK, I'll bite- who?

The logical criteria-
1. Someone who we could actually get (so no Dabo, Saban, or Andy Reid)
2. Someone who is demonstrably better than CJF
3. Someone who would maintain/restore what we used to call success with honor

I'll hang up and listen.
It’s not about the fans putting a list together. It’s a matter of either the university accepting mediocrity or doing your best to change for the better. Do you really think JF is the only option out there for us? Like I said in another thread….there really isn’t much difference between 8, 9 or 10 win seasons when your goal is a MNC. But….. I spend money every year going and supporting the approach

His question is valid. If those with a loud opinion feel like the change needs to be made, but have no plan as to how to obtain a better choice, then what’s the point? Exhibit A…our government.

Your point 4) is the major issue. CJF is not a game day coach. Let someone else have full reign. CJF is very good at recruiting, and I have to believe all the other elements of being HC.

I’d hire a “consultant” to speak with the team with the understanding that said consultant will successfully engage Fraudklin into committing a fireable offense.

This Kraft guy doesn’t seem to know how to push the right buttons 🙄

He is good at recruiting. But Ryan Day is great. So you will have to beat them another way!

I’m not even going to to read the responses. I’ll throw my hat in the ring for ONLY $3 mill a year. The rest goes towards quality assistant coaches and coordinators who will make me look like a genius.

Being a legitimate national contender makes that easier.
Ryan Day inherited a national championship contender. He didn’t build it up from the ground, which is what we are asking Franklin to do. Make no mistake, Ryan Day is one hell of a coach, but he wasn’t trying to convert backup dlineman to OL or dressing 45 scholarship players for games when he took over.

Yes, but we’ve seen this movie before. Day isn’t that old, he isn’t going anywhere unless he gets the NFL itch and Hartline is in his prime. Can’t have 2 HCs.

Well since the current playoff system was implemented, 9 of the top schools have gone through 31 coaching changes and none of them have won a NC. These are schools that have won NC’s in the past and many of them have better recruiting than PSU and better facilities. So I’m pretty sure just changing coaches isn’t enough.

I didn’t give Day credit for creating a Nat’l contender. I replied to a post that said he was a great recruiter.
P.S. How many years does CJF need yet?

That was 10 years ago.

Yes, Day was born in third base. But he has had little/no drop off. Play a small bit worse. Recruiting a small bit better.

And I get your point. I hated the fourth down call too, but it wasn't even the worst decision of the quarter. Not changing QBs was even dumber when it was clear that Allar didn't have it (for whatever reason- it doesn't matter). If I wasn't pissed enough to consider the idea, I wouldn't have started the thread.

But the fact is that James has done better than probably more than 90% of the coaches in the game, and I'm not ready to risk flushing the whole thing without knowing something about what I'm doing that for.

BTW- I'm not giving up on Allar, either- but he needed to be off the field for the 4th quarter on Saturday.

You make a good point here. I was speaking with a friend (a UT-Austin alum) about the game, and we both thjought Franklin should have given Pribula a series or two when it was clear Allar was overwhelmed and could have used som e calm on the sideline.

My friend suggested that (just his opinion, of course) that Franklin is afraid to bench Allar for fear of appearing to justify the criticism that he cannot develop a top-level QB. He claims that if Allar fails to "light up" defenses, Franklin may never be able to recruit another 5-star QB again. He says my complaining of the pass plays following 2 long runs by Singleton prove his point. The OC and HC want Allar to be a high-level QB with gaudy passing stats.

I'm not sure I agree with all of his ideas, but, as you said, I do think there needed to be a change of QB on Saturday. It might have even helped Allar settle down somewhat with the chance to see Pribula handling the offense.

Pull Allar against T™️osu, and he’s starting for kentucky next week.

If you're willing to settle for 8-10 win seasons without challenging, except infrequently, for college and national championships, then Franklin is your guy. And you're right, making a change doesn't guarantee better outcomes. PSU could be worse, maybe a whole lot worse, before the brain-trust gets lucky, if they ever do.

There are downsides to staying the course. The fanbase may grow restive with a program that doesn't challenge at the elite level. That means fewer tickets sold, less money donated , fewer and less lucrative NIL opportunities for players. How likely is this? I have no idea.

More likely is the possibility that Franklin comes to the conclusion that he will never win a national title, a goal that he's articulated, at PSU and he bolts. He isn't sufficiently introspective or analytical to identify his own shortcomings and fix them. He won't even blame it on a lack of resources or insufficient "alignment"; PSU has pretty much given him a blank check. It will come down to recruiting geography. The players he needs to compete for a national title are concentrated elsewhere, so if the mountain isn't coming to Muhammad, Muhammad has to pitch his tent elsewhere, How likely is this? Probably not as high as many may think. Takes two to tango and I'm not sure that he'll be able to find the right dance partner.

I see your point, but in reality we've never really challenged for national championships, except infrequently and quite long ago, at that.

I've been a fan since the mid-sixties and in that time we've won two (82, 86) and had legit contenders three other years (68, 69, and 94). DO I wish for better? Of course- but I want better, not just different.

Forget history. What are the current objectives of Franklin and the Athletic Department (there might not be as much alignment as Franklin thinks) and what would it take for PSU to achieve them?
