As I type this, Paul Davis is whining "I Go Crazy" over our office speakers, which almost made me rethink my stance on yacht rock. I 17'ing hate this song.

I guess like every other era of music, I like most of it, but it can't all be great.

Gimme some Rupert Holmes and Christopher Cross
One of my favorite music trivia questions. From Timothy to Escape & Him. How's that for a range?

"Timothy" is a pop rock song recorded by The Buoys as a single in 1970. The song describes a mine cave-in and aftermath, with the implication the two survivors cannibalized their companion, the eponymous Timothy. Written by Rupert Holmes, who also performed piano on the song, "Timothy" was conceived from the band being forced to promote their first single without the aid of their label, Scepter Records. Holmes' solution was to have the song generate attention by depicting a controversial subject.

Despite initial efforts from radio stations to ban the song, "Timothy" proved to be a success for the Buoys. It reached the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart on April 17, 1971, where it remained on the chart for eight weeks and peaked at #17.

Why you hating on Meridian's own? (I would have lost that dead or alive)
Man I would put Cool Night and Sweet Life right in the middle of Yacht Rock era greatness... but I just can't abide IGC. It probably touches some emotion that's buried deep down in me from my childhood, but that's where I like to keep them.

Michael McDonald is Yacht Rock. If you listen to the SiriusXM station I can guarantee every 4th song has Michael McDonald in it as either the singer or backup. He must have sang backup on thousands of songs.
Why that clip is so funny when he runs into the studio to just do a 3 second backing vocal.
There are a bunch of them and wouldn't argue with the @onewoof MR but might I suggest Ambrosia is Yacht Rock?

A friend of who used to live by the McDonalds in Tennessee near Nashville said he was a nice guy. He spent a lot of time with his family. I enjoyed that music, and as they said in the preview, the video killed the radio star.

Yacht Rock Revue is a really good band that plays across the Southeast, maybe more parts of the country but if you have a chance to go see them, do.
Also Rumours band is more than awesome!

Saw Yacht Rock Revue in Vegas a couple of years ago and even dressed the part. I was walking through the Luxor and Mandalay Bay speaking to everybody like I owned the joints. My gf was walking 5 feet behind me hiding her face in her hands. I couldn't even get her to wear a Gilligan cap.

Define Caucasian...

Btw, I'm not a MM hater, but I often turn off or away from his songs when they come on.

But never Takin it to the Streets. That one is smooth as a fine wine.
Anglo and/or Caucasian decent

Keep Forgetting is unmatched.

one of my best friends is MM 1st cousin. they both grew up in St.Louis. MM is about 20 years older than my friend. my friend talked about going to parties at MM house and the rest of the Doobie Brothers would be there along with Redd Foxx who was also from St. Louis.

If it wasn't feeling like a party early on, you know it became one when Redd Foxx walked in with his cocaine briefcase...

i think it was around 2005 when the 40 Year Old Virgin came out. my friend had yet to see it and did not know anything about the MM scenes . he came over and I put it on and he was not amused. i personally thought it was hilarious.

Btw, I'm not a MM hater,

I, unabashedly, am.

I grew up on Motown. A friend recommended him to me in the early 00's. It was a bunch of Motown covers, just honkified. Said friend was shocked I wasn't into him. Dude is 120% Caucasian. Harry Connick Jr. has more soul than this man. For that matter so does Dan Aykroyd.

See, Chris Stapleton, Post Malone, or hell, even, that Jelly Roll fella, for current honkeys that pay homage to the artists of that genre.

Michael McDonald just sang the same words.

For the record, I am also, very much a honkey. I was never really sure what Yacht Rock was. I may watch this to confirm that I hate it.

Takin it to the streets is top notch. I like the bass in it.

“What a Fool Believes” is good too. As a kid I always thought “It Keeps You Running” sounded like a video game.

I like MM, and James Ingram for that matter... but I could definitely do without that quintessential 80's earworm Yah Mo B There. (Nothing against you, God 🙏**)

His first taste of fame came because he was getting airplay from black DJs on urban radio stations.

I think you may be overstating his lack of street cred a bit.

Yup, the bass in that one is funky and thumpy. Speaking of Yacht Rock legends, this was from a tour that MM, Boz Scaggs and Donald Fagen did. The musicians and singers backing them are phenomenal, especially the drummer...

Daryl Hall

I'll try to watch this with an open mind. We're mostly a bunch of middle aged men here, so our tastes in music is dated.

But Daryl Hall ain't got **** on Wilson Picket, David Ruffin, or THE Rev Al Green.

It would be interesting for this show to change my mind.

However, Keisha in the Mrs. Rachel multiverse carries that franchise. I'll die on that hill.
