There is way too much death on this board right now. Something to spice things up - who holds the NCAA's All Time Leading Scoring Record for basketball?

Pistol Pete Maravich

Caitlin Clark

IDK but what's with Pete's socks?
Lucky socks. He wore them in the NBA as well.

I saw Maravich play in the 1970 NIT tournament, LSU 83-82 Georgetown, in Madison Square Garden. My dad and his brother Bill took me, Georgetown and Fordham, respectively. Maravich had only 18 points, his career low, I believe. Still, I retain a picture of a line drive jump shot from the top of the key.

Why does it matter a guy or girl scores the most points? I think the debate is stupid and people arguing for and against is stupid. They both have had great careers and work to be the best at what they do. We are going to forget about this in the coming days and not talk about it again until the next person gets close to this many point. Moving on....

This is a silly debate, men vs. women. It only matters how one identifies. The sooner that you realize this, the sooner that everyone will feel belonged. 🥰

Not sure where I read it, but I recently saw an article state that the NCAA does not recognize the AIAW individual records when those schools joined the NCAA. Supposedly Clark is not close to that record unless she comes back next year.

She passed the AIAW leader too.

Grant graduated as the all-time/all-division scoring leader in college basketball history
with 4,045 points (378 more than Pistol Pete Maravich).[1] His record was later broken by both Phil Hutcheson (4,106) and John Pierce(4,230) of Lipscomb University.[6]

If you want to ask who scored the most points in Div 1 and 2 college basketball, the answer for now is John Pierce. You ask the question this way, there’s only one answer. You can, if you wish, ask who scored the most points in Div 1 Men’s basketball history and there’s only one answer: Maravich.

I think anyone will admit that Maravich had a more impressive collegiate career than Clark. Nobody’s saying otherwise.

Note that those Lipscomb guys didn't play in the NCAA...Lipscomb was still NAIA back then. So, I'm sticking with Grant as my answer to the leading NCAA Scorer of all time.

As for Maravich's career, that's a tough one. Clark had a lot of team success as well (and really filled up the box score), while Maravich was a volume scorer. But I think it's a total waste of time to try and compare players across generations even within their own sex, let alone trying to make this comparison. As I stated previously, it's hard enough even trying to compare something like Clark to Brittney Griner, who played the same sport/level in the same generation.

Since the question is "Who is the NCAA's All-Time Leading Scorer?" Anyone who voted for Ole Pistol Pete probably needs to revisit their > and < signs.

Jack Nicklaus has won 18 majors in golf using course that, for men, averages 7,200 yards.
Betty Sweet Swing comes along and wins 19 majors in the LPGA playing courses that average 6,000 - 6,200 yards.
Is she better than Jack?
Is she the greatest golfer that ever played the game?
Are the golf balls engineered differently for the current game (giving her an advantage) then when Jack played?
I’ll leave you all with this to argue.

Yeah, Maravich would have had better career if he hadn't played for his father. Imagine him at Kansas or UCLA, where he would have been forced to play defense or else sit. He would have averaged 27-30 maybe at those schools but he might have won a championship.

The question was not and has never been who’s better, Clark or Maravich….its who is the all time leading scorer in major college basketball and that’s Clark. I’m not sure why so many people think it’s a comparison between who’s better….maybe who’s better in their respective league and time frame, but I doubt anybody thinks Clark could have beaten Maravich when he was in college. It’s a silly argument…Clark has more points, end of discussion.

BTW, PSU women play against Wiskey on Thursday at 6:30 in the B1G tournament. If they win, they play Iowa on Friday at 6:30.

I don't have an issue with the ball but the 3 pointer is an issue. It's been said that Pete could have avg another 5-10 points a game over his career with it.

Yes. And it’s why Navratilova > Djokovic. She won 59 total Grand Slams to his 24.

Staying on the Pete Vs Caitlin theme:

LSU coach Dale Brown charted every shot Maravich scored and concluded that, if his shots from three-point range had been counted as three points, Maravich's average would have totaled 57 points per game[11][12] and 12 three-pointers per game.

In addition, Third, the shot clock had also not yet been instituted in NCAA play during Maravich's college career.

Well I guess the question of who is the best; is if Pete played against women would he have scored less. If Caitlyn played against men would she have scored more.
