Let me be sure I understand this; don't sign a highly talented, experienced qb because you might upset your true freshman qb who hasn't really done anything of consequence. Geez, no wonder Carolina is a perpetual .500 football program.
This is probably the only thing i've ever agreed with you on. we don't want to bring in a proven commodity bc we want to see our favorite guy start.

I'm not opposed in principle to bringing him in. I am opposed to bringing him in if it would result in us losing Sellers. How foolish it would be to lose the future for a 1 year band-aid, and not even a great one. If we were talking about bringing in one of the top QBs in the game who could transform us into a contender, well that's a different story. That ain't KJ. We still have the QB position in 2025 to worry about and desperately need Sellers to stay in the fold.

I don’t know if it’s entirely because of wanting to “play our favorite guy.” That’s at least not the concern for me. For me it’s about burning bridges and the message you’re sending high school recruits in general. Who knows what promises and talks are happening behind closed doors with these recruits and you’ve got to be careful about burning bridges. Regardless of proven commodities, as of right now, the majority of your team is still made up of guys you signed out of high school. If it becomes common knowledge that a school will pretend to have your best interests in mind to your face but then turn around and drop you when the next shiny thing comes along it’s going to bite you eventually.

His numbers in 21/22 were better than anything Ratt did here. That's just a fact. He was handcuffed by a bad OC this year...something we understand all too well.

Just thinking out loud here, but maybe NIL is moving us to a series of bandaid, and the idea of bringing guys along long term is a thing of the past?

I don't agree with either of you (😃). He's a one one and done. Not worth upsetting the apple cart. Shane is making the right call here.

What's going to upset the apple cart is going 4-8. We desperately need to avoid that. If this were 2 years ago I'd agree. He doesn't have the time to miss on a QB. Not saying Sellers is a miss, but we know what we'd have in KJ.

Yes, bringing in Rattler as a transfer solved the losing record issue. It will be no different with KJ.

The interesting thing to me in all of this is that prior to it being rumored that Jefferson would enter the portal and that we might be pursuing him, it was never discussed that we might need a QB from the portal. In all the discussion of portal needs, I can't recall a person saying QB was one of those needs. Then, it's rumored we're pursuing Jefferson and the narrative is that we absolutely need a QB from the portal (and this was before Bailey and Gauthier announced they were transferring).

Rattler is, no doubt, our biggest portal grab. His first year we paired with an awful OC. His second year we paired him with an awful OL.
Agreed. What will change next year if we bring in KJ to get us to a winning record? No juice? We need to grow with Sellers.

Yep. Personally, I don't want to wait until 2025 to see Sellers. Maybe he'll be a bust, but I'm excited to see him play.

It's not like KJ makes us into a CFP contender or anything. There will be so many missing pieces around him. Maybe you're looking at 6-7 wins as opposed to 5-6 wins. Just doesn't seem worth it to me. And he's guaranteed one and done.

What would Jefferson cost? Its not free today, $2 or $3 million? Seems like with what is returning on our team we should spend the money elsewhere.

Matt Ruhle was just quoted saying:

"Make no mistake that a good quarterback in the portal costs a million to $1.5 million to $2 million right now," Rhule told reporters. "Just so we’re on the same page. Let’s make sure we all understand what’s happening. There’s some teams that have $6 or $7 million players playing for them."

NIL has made players mercenaries. They have no problem walking away from a program if they think they can get a better deal somewhere else. Why should the program view them any differently than they view the program? If Beamer is promising recruits playing time and promising them starting positions, he is a dead man walking.

The irony of the whole thing is that a coach can't get away with promising a player playing time, but if a player doesn't get the playing time he wants, he'll split.

That is why the coach has to put the success of the program before the feelings of any one player. I don't want to see Beamer crap on Sellers but he can't not bring in a player who can offer immediate help for fear of upsetting any player.

18 next year when Sellers loses his first game:

"Season is over, should've brought in KJ."

Nope. I can promise you this, one thing you'll never see from me is bemoaning the fact that we stuck with our own players over someone from the portal.

There are no guarantees anymore. It's just as likely Sellers hits the portal after blowing up in 2024 as he returns. When it comes to QBs, there is no more future. When OSU and OU can't keep their starting QBs, it's a problem. If teams are really paying $1M for a QB, you'd be stupid not to go get that. Sadly, you just can't assume you're going to be able to grow with a QB.
