I graduated from Penn State, and have two children who did as well.
But I haven't sent PSU a penny since they threw Joe under the bus, and never will again.
I root for the football team and I've been verbally supportive of the HC, but I don't write any checks to support them.
I watch on TV, and at 74 I doubt that I'll ever step foot into the Beav again.

Am I still "WE"?

what's your story? are you "WE"?

Very similar to us.... we were already contemplating giving up our season tix. Between time to get up there and being pulled in so many directions with kids, family and friend obligations with cost of tix, hotel, etc we were talking about whether to keep buying season tickets. Then the scandal hit and throwing Joe under the bus and the way the entire PSU population was treated by the BOT it was a fairly easy decision to give up the tickets and not donate any more to the school. This was our own choice and we don't critique others who continue to contribute to the school. If the University/BOT at some point makes things right and recognizes Joe and the Paterno family I probably would start donating to the school again. I may at some point go see a game in the Beav after renovations, but in all honesty we didn't miss the games as much as we thought we would. I would rather buy tickets for 1 game and go for a big game now.

I haven't bought a licensed PSU/NCAA product since 2011 and never will again.

Joe Paterno is Penn State and Penn State is Joe Paterno - ‘twas always thus, and always thus will be.
For sure, Joe was one of the most important people in the history of the university. For sure, the BOT is garbage. But the university existed before Joe and it'll exist long after Joe. I never met the man but it seems to me he'd be uncomfortable with the notion that he's the university and the university is him.

Sometimes it seems that I am one of very few people who absolutely loathed the evil way that they treated Paterno, but yet fully recognize that:
  • PSU is still my alma mater and the PSU football team is still my top rooting interest in any sport at any level.
  • Coach Franklin was not involved in the above referenced evil and has elevated the program from the depths following such evil.
    • This even includes fighting an uphill battle for things that some have considered "silly", but which have been clearly demonstrated by specific instances in previous recruiting cycles to make a difference...CJF has been the leader pushing to "catch up" with top level programs.
    • CJF also still emphasizes values and education, about which all Penn Staters can be proud.
  • Current players were not involved in the above referenced evil.
  • Countless Paterno players support the current program.
  • The Board of Trustees do no play football on Saturdays. Supporting the team has nothing to do with condoning or even overlooking previous BOT actions.
  • The media who unfairly portrayed Paterno likewise does not play football on Saturdays. Let them be forced to report on Penn State football SUCCESS.

Well stated and a perfectly reasonable point of view

I am "WE." I am sane. You are "you" and "cuckoo," but not "we."

I've more than made up for your lack of donations, and attendance and interest has rebounded ... as if you aren't missed in the least. No one cares about your wrong-minded protest which, if successful, would do nothing but hurt even more kids. Luckily, your cult-like hero worship wasn't able to be successful, long-term. No one wants you in their beav.

Spot on. Let's also remember that Ketchum or whatever overpaid PR firm told the BOT to blame the "culture of athletics" at PSU. No better way to give the finger back at the BOT than having our sports program thrive.

All in for “WE.” Didn’t like how things happened in 2011 and after. But Franklin is really making progress and trying hard. The team is doing the same. There‘s new leadership now. I‘m not going to let a grudge deny me the pleasure this season brought me. It was really exciting and there’s more to come. The stadium and facilities projects, the new DC, the continuing great recruits. Franklin deserves respect for what he’s done and doing. It’s a tough job. Everything is very positive now. It feels good. They wanted to take it away forever. We got it back. I’m embracing it. It was tough work and Franklin deserves credit.

Even those who weren't Joe Paterno fans recognized the injustices leveled against him by an uninformed media and a fiduciary irresponsible BOT.

Yup, and they realize without a proper correction, the very same thing can happen to the current or future coach. The stage one thinkers struggle to see the bigger picture.

I walked away from Penn State for a number of reasons. Joe was one, but it was also incompetent leadership at both the Board of Trustees and Alumni Association levels; fiscal irresponsibility; sliding academic rankings; and the realization that what I perceived Penn State to be never existed. There is an arrogance among many Penn State alums that we are far better than other schools. For 40 years I was one of them. In fact we are pretty much the same. Every school has its share of angels and demons, reasons for pride and shame, glorious victories and crushing defeats. All that said, it is possible that I am the one with the problem. Penn State may be all that her admirers proclaim her to be, and I have just become a crotchety old man. More likely the answer lies somewhere in between. We much each decide for ourselves.

Just curious as I have contemplated this issue often. What would the university narrative be to honor Joe Paterno in some way? How does the school signal the need, desire and decision to honor him now? I really don't know the answer.

They won't. It would require an admission that they were wrong, that the Freeh report was a sham and that the people who protected The Second Mile were never held accountable. The backlash from the press would be huge- no way they ever do it.

My, aren't you a nasty little thing- you should probably get that looked at.

You harbor such animosity over the alleged mistreatment of one person that you've abandoned a university because of it.

And you felt compelled to make a thread proclaiming this, and asking for support in your petty vindictiveness and harboring of hate ...

And you're calling someone else a "nasty little thing"?!?!

I just made another donation to the university in Nitt1300's name.

Fix yourself. Or just go away and let your emotional immaturity eat away at you in silence.
