what why? smart guys explain this, please
It’s a smart move because the Eagles can defer one 1st to next year when there’s a much deeper QB class. They’ll have two 1sts again in 2023, in addition to two 2nds in 2024. That gives them ammo to trade up, etc for a QB if Hurts proves he isn’t the guy.

I like this a lot. Figure the saints pick next year is gonna be pretty high, so this gives them 2 picks in next years draft to potentially move up in a better QB class. Which means this is a put up or shut up year for hurts. So 2 first this year and next year. Spread it out.

What I think this MIGHT mean is there is a FA in a position of need coming real soon. Maybe WR?

I think it’s also possible that NO pick is pretty high in 2023 with Payton moving on and the team being in cap hell. Think 2021 Carolina type of season and pick.

Yeah you posted this as I was writing mine. Agree here. And that gives them plenty to move up if theres a sure-fire QB next year.

Thks. I don’t totally agree. The guys on NFL Moving the Chains. Pat Kerwin and Jim Miller called it a strange trade. They think NO is trying to go higher to get a QB. As far as the Eagles? Still not sure, though they did mention what u mentioned, gives they a yr to further evaluate Hurts
IDK I liked having the 3 picks They have plenty of holes to fill

If the Saints 2023 pick is better than #20, this seems like the Eagles got more value.
Let's say the Eagles 2022 #19 cancels out with the Saints 2022 #18 (conservative for the Eagles).
Then Eagles give up 2022 #16 for Saints 2023 1st rd and 2024 2nd rd
Eagles give up 2022 R6 pick for Saints 2022 R3 and R7

I also think it’s just tough to nail three 1sts in the same draft. This spreads it out to your point. The return is impressive for Howie. This is where he really shines.

They called it strange because it raised more questions (for the Saints) than it answered. I got the vibe they liked it for Philly.

Yes, I agree with this, NO must think one of these QBs in ‘22 is their guy for the future.

Meanwhile, the Eagles are positioned for a QB in ‘23 if JH doesn’t work out.

I hope they go defense this year, DE and CB.

I read something from someone who talked to siriani and howie at the combine and came away thinking WR. Personally I hope they go D with both as well (LB and DE) and get a veteran WR (Julio Jones/AJ Green) but I’m just a fan.

It gets interesting post Adams and Hill deals. Veteran WRs just got really expensive. See Christian Kirk too.

Drafting an Olave or similar wouldn’t be bad either.

I like the deal for the Eagles. And maybe the Saints aren't finished. Since this year's draft is a bit thin at QB, maybe they'll package their current two first round picks to move up into a better position to select one of the QBs before another team gets a chance. The deal with the Eagles didn't do a whole lot to put the Saints ahead of other QB needy teams. Could it be they were looking for more pieces to put together another deal to move higher??

Everyone is thinking the Saints are after a QB in the draft. What if they aren’t? I’ve heard OT and WR too. By keeping the #15 pick, the Eagles ensure they get first crack at a WR if things stay pat.

Eliot seems to have changed his analysis of the trade. He's on sports talk this afternoon saying he now doesn't like the trade.

There ya go, and the reason I don’t like the trade. Howie thinks the end game is about draft choices. It’s about making your team better. I’d love to have added 3 stud bolts to this years team.

I still like the trade. In 2021 we were all hoping the Dolphins wouldn't exceed the low expectations set for them. Instead, they had a decent season with a shot at the playoffs which came up short. As has been talked about a lot, this trade sets up the possibility of getting a very high 2023 pick from a Saints team which is in transition. Here's hoping the Saints won't exceed the low expectations set for them in 2022.

There are two ways to position yourself to land a top ten draft pick. 1) Suck. 2) Work a trade with what is projected to be a struggling team and get a first rounder from them. I prefer #2. Kicking the can down the road implies someone is putting off dealing with a problem. That's not the case here.

The risk is that Howie and Co haven’t been good at picking players in the draft. Do you think the odds are strong of them going 3 for 3 in first round picks? In the 15-20 window?

This trade lets them focus on two bites of the apple. They can then see how Hurts and this group develops and then take two more bites (or trade up for one big bite) next year.

Neither argument is absolutely right. That’s why it is fun.

I don't think they were ever keeping all three picks, and I think you actually said that a few months ago (kudos!).
It also spreads out salaries of those high picks a bit more.
Ultimately, the Eagles have more needs than these 3 picks were going to address and they just added more picks to help.

Oh, and someone explain what "kick the can down the road" means to Eliot.

And I love the extra 2nd and 3rd in the deal. Imagine having another Zach Ertz type of pick. (I choose Ertz and not JJAW).

If you can’t trust Howie w three bites then why does he have a job??

In fairness, only a few GMs in league history have made three 1st round picks in the same draft. It’s not part of the job req.

So much scouting and analysis goes into making one pick. That may be 50-50. Nailing three picks? Maybe 1 in 8?

At 15, 16 and 18, the upside isn’t high enough to take on that kind of risk. Keep some of your powder dry for next year and beyond.

seeing how most coaches in the NFL are essentially on 1 yr contracts, I say, screw next year.

being reported on several blogs( Eagles Now Tom Mott) and other Twitter feeds…Jalen Hurts has been training with elite QB Coach Tom House on the West Coast. Several things are important with this news..#1 ) Hurts wants to improve and recognizes the importance of improving his throwing motion/ accuracy . #2) House is the QB whisperer for numerous top line QB‘s and is known as a no nonsense teacher of efficient…quick/ accurate throwing motion and foot placement. # 3) Twitter rumor that Hurts has been working with Tom Brady as well who also works and has worked with Coach House. Dan Silo on Twitter is the source of the Brady rumor.Netting this all out….if true…it is a good thing that Jalen feels the need to improve…now and with the Eagles being in good shape in the first round next season they are essentially giving Hurts one year to get better or potentially be replaced next season….

Good to hear. From what I've gathered about Hurts is that desire and work ethic are not an issue. I'm certainly rooting for him.

Have we seen Dan throwing study cubicles out of Ellicott hall lately?

This is one of the things I love about hurts. Actually one of the top things. Dude is a pro’s pro. And at such a young age….

I know throwing the football is THE thing for a QB to be good at, and other traits are secondary, but I’ll be damned if Hurts doesn’t have every one of those other traits nailed down. If he can lock down the whole throwing the football thing, he could be VERY good for a VERY long time.

OTOH, compare that to Wentz. If what's been reported is true, he felt as if he was a finished product and nobody could tell him what to do.

He is a coach’s son. Those players tend to understand. Still, if he doesn’t make good progress this year, the Eagles will bail, guaranteed.

Interesting. I wouldn’t be against it as long as they don’t have to immediately extend him for silly dollars. I wonder what the Texans would want in terms of draft pick comp?
Agreed. I grow concerned about the salaries and draft capital that vet WRs command these days.
