The Eagles have long been a “build along the lines” franchise. They’ve also been a better to draft a replacement a year early than late team.

There are pros and cons to these moves, sure. But Cox is leaving in the next year and they go from six-time Pro Bowl DT to question mark there. Having Davis in the fold give them a chance to maintain DT as a strength. Same with the Center.

I really thought they’d draft Johnson at 13. But I don’t think a DT with elite athleticism is a bad choice at all.

Being in the 3rd round, I think Dean is mostly upside. If he plays, he’s likely a huge upgrade over what they have at LB now. Huge.
Great points, I agree. Getting replacements early are very critical. Highly likely Cox and Kelce are done after this year. And, maybe more importantly, it doesn't force them to draft a need next year. Had Gardner or Stingley dropped, I think the Eagles probably go that direction. But they were off the board earlier than some expected. Not sure there was starter quality at CB in round 2 or 5, where they picked. Secondary will be a a concern. But have to give credit to Howie, solid draft and AJ Brown is a proven, stud WR.

I really think fletch was a unicorn designed for a 4-3 D (maybe a 3-4 end). Milton Williams is more The pass rush side of fletch and Davis is more of the run stop side of fletch, plus having Davis and the UDFA Noah Elliss it looks like the reports of Gannon wanting to go to a hybrid D are right. He’s got 2 true NT’s on the roster now. But to fletch and Davis/Williams, I think you have 2 to make 1.

And @LundyPSU you’re spot on I think. Draft replacements a year early instead of being backed into a corner when Fletch and Kelce are out the door. Smart move by Howie. Especially when you hear what Kelce had to say about Jurgen.

Eagles to release Big Nate. Surprised by this a little, after starting about 20 games he was getting better. He’ll start for someone by years end

How much of that was scheme and depth vs he might not be a solid pass rusher and he doesn't have the wind to be a consistent 3 down DT/NT?
The Eagles clearly think it was scheme. The stats answer your question. He was only on for 5 of 37 third downs in those games.

I suspect that is part of the equation. Georgia had 2 DTs taken in the 1st round of the 2022 NFL draft. They also had Jalen Carter at DT, and in the way-too-early mock 2023 drafts, he's the top DT.

I think you also have to factor in that Georgia had 5 defensive players taken in the 1st round of the NFL.

I don't totally dismiss Eliot Shorr-Parks' opinion, but he was against Davis being the Eagles 1st round pick before the draft, and has since indicated on the radio, in articles he's written, and in tweets that if Davis only plays 1st & 2nd downs, then Davis was not worth being picked at #13.

I'd also note that Fletcher Cox was not a great pass rusher in college, but became an excellent pass rusher at DT in the pros.
