Guy is flat out nasty. If you could take any young arm, he’d be the choice of many.

Gritty effort by Nola too. He had to battle and he did.

Great effort by both pitchers. Their stat lines were almost identical with the one exception being zero walks for Nola and three for Alcantara. His walk to Hoskins resulted in the tying run in the bottom of the eighth. Those freebies have a tendency to come back and bite you. As the saying goes, there's no defense for a walk. It's also four starts in a row for Nola in which he hasn't walked anyone. His season WHIP is now 0.88.

Yeah, for whatever reason, both this season and over the course of his career, Nola has gotten very little run support when he's pitching. In part I think that's due to him being the Phightin's clear #1 for most of his tenure, though now it's kind of 1A and 1B between Wheeler and him.

It appears that they're lifting Eflin after 71 pitches??? Hopefully, this is not another Phils bullpen adventure.

well, Knebel is in and batter 1 gets a single (great fielding play by Bohm who nearly threw him out), and batter 2 gets a walk (after batter 1 stole 2nd). So 1st & 2nd and no outs. We got spoiled last week.

edit: and then another walk to make it based loaded and no outs. Knebel with 14 pitches -- 11 balls and 3 strikes.

edit 2: and a single that gets past Didi at SS, as the infield was playing in. So it's tied up, 9-9, and still nobody out. Thompson finally decides to remove Knebel, and the fans let him know what they think of his perfermance.

Seriously, this bullpen should not have seen the ball until at least the 8th. Eflin was cruising and getting stronger as the game went. This bullpen cannot reliably throw strikes. Why the manager went to them so early I don't know. Familia can't throw strikes, and Knebel is just a gas station attendant. Tie game, bases loaded and didn't get a single out.

Say what you want about Girardi, the winning streak, and the offense, but this game definitely proves that the most egregious flaw on the team, the bullpen, has absolutely ZERO to do with any manager and has everything to do with the actual players in that bullpen and the GM that assembled them (despite the fact that we may like other things that said GM has done).

yep, but not a surprise. this bp has conservatively given away 40+ games in the last 1+ years. the gm can find find money for used up outfielders, but can't find $$ for a lock down closer. there have been some out there. the guy who should have been fired is the gm.

He has certainly built an, uh, odd roster. No doubt about that. I know Hoskins led the way and carried the team but to score nine runs and lose is just ridiculous.
