Wheeler looking great through 2 innings. Wright looking very good as well for the Braves. Harper got a double off of him in the 2nd inning, with no outs (I think), but the Fightins couldn't get him home.

Ugh, Wheeler gives up a run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th. A hit batter (Acuna), then a walk on a 3-2 pitch to Swanson brought Matt Olson to the plate. With 2 strikes Wheeler gave him a breaking ball (a mistake, since Olson's swing on fastballs was pretty bad), and he ground it past Hopkins to plate Acuna.

That brought up Riley with 1st & 3rd, and 2 outs, and he topped a pitch that ended up being an infield hit, plating Swanson.

D'Arnaud then followed with a single up the middle (with 2 strikes) to plate Olson.

Wheeler finally gets out of it by getting Harris to ground out to 2nd.

Wheeler only gave up 1 base runner through 5, and had 2 outs (and the 3-2 pitch to Swanson could have been called a strike), and now it's 3-0, Braves, after 6 innings. smh

Wheeler on cruise control with two outs. Then a hit batter and a walk with two outs. Boggles the mind how fast a game can change, but that's baseball.

Nice to see Hoskins picking up the playoff choke banner after Simmons blew town.

Thought that 3-2 pitch to Swanson was a strike btw.

Ball not carrying well tonight in the humidity. Several crushed balls died on the warning track.

His change was only thing working. Can’t live on change when you can’t command the fastball. His fb command was the issue yesterday. He does not look confident and with no command, how can he?
I think we are kind of saying the same thing. I get pitching backwards but I always thought you pitch off your fastball. He has basically flipped that from last year to this year. Look at his pitch breakdown year on year. Whatever the reason, he doesn’t like his fastball. So, you’d better have a really good change and back it up with a good cutter if you don’t like your fastball. If you don’t, I think you’re going to have a tough go if hitters start with knowing you’re not committed to throwing #1. I think offseason they need to figure out how to move forward with him but they need to get on the same page with an approach. Hard for me to think it doesn’t start with the fastball and throwing it with conviction.

That was a tough one. They can rightly be happy 1-1 coming home but that was set up perfect. If the Phillies had cashed in even a run early, I think that would have been HUGE. Wheeler was on a pitch count to allow him to likely go 9. If the Phillies could have gone ahead, the Braves would have started to press and if you can expand the zone even a smidge due to their eagerness and anxiety, that would have really helped given the stuff Wheeler brings to the table. The series now shifts to pitching questions for the duration. I suspect that Morton starts game 3 and they try to get Strider ready for Game 4. Even if Strider starts, he hasn’t pitched in nearly a month and will be restricted so that game 4 becomes a pen game. I still like the Phillies but I think I’d start Thor in game 4 and back him up with Falter. Phillies have a big advantage for Game 3 but if it goes to 5, Phillies will get Freid on full rest versus Wheeler and Suarez.

Given where Wheeler was pitch count, they lost a chance to put a gigantic stranglehold on the Series.

This smells like it ultimately goes 5. I still think Schwarber and Hoskins run into some pitches before it’s over. Going to be fun to see this play out but I think they know that they a nice setup last night.

Yeah and it only took Acuna 5 minutes to get to first base.
That took way too long to decide whether to keep him in the game or remove him. I understand if a player gets hit in the head or critical location on the body, but the umpires allowing the Braves to delay the game as long as they did was an injustice to the Phillies and specifically Wheeler. He clearly cooled off and was not the same. Hoskins clearly misplayed a ball he should have at at least knocked down.

I mean, don't hit the guy if you're worried about how long it's going to take him to get feeling back in his arm and back in play. Would you say the same if it were Harper?

In games that Nola pitched vs. the Braves the Phillies record is 17-13. He always pitches them tough. I agree that Morton will pitch tomorrow but Strider may be used out of the pen for this series.

Morton has been bad lately and very bad against the Phils this year. Bats have got to score at least one early. You’re not winning this series if you go 0-2 in the wheeler nola starts.

In essence, bats won the G1 for the Phils, and then lost G2 for the Phils.

I guess we'll see how Uncle Charlie responds after 13 days of rest. And in the 5 games he's pitched against the Phillies this year, 4, 2, 4, 0, and 6 earned runs. I wouldn't consider that very bad.

The Phillies have a .301 BA and a .812 ops against him this year. For comparison JT Realmuto hit .276 with an .820 ops over the course of the year. Morton was very bad against the Phillies.
