Watching Olympics? I almost forgot them. Did catch skating - the Russian women are in another solar system in terms of talent. I see some athletes competing for countries other than their home country. I think if cases where they didn't make their home country team seems like no big deal. When they are a medal contender and would have been their top athlete in the event, then that feels like the athlete is sticking it to their home. Most of these countries supported their athletes when they were young and developing.

I am watching the women of the Olympics. There are a good number of "Girl Next Door" ladies that have drawn my attention. A favorite is German ice hockey player Tanja Eisenschmid who played college hockey at North Dakota.
The first photo reminds me of my wife in her late teens/early 20's. Her smile could light up a room.

Women’s Hockey final: Canada 4, USA 2

Canada takes the top seed into the next round. The USA outshot Canada by a huge margin, but that’s like winning time of possession. 😕

She's a highly successful model/extreme sports superstar and this will no doubt propel her career. It's not 1960 anymore.

My issue with Gu is that she will always be able to go back to the comfort and safety of the US. I think her goal of ‘lifting up’ young people of China is lofty and mostly unreasonable and that there is some posturing involved. China isn’t some poor third world country; they’re massive human rights violators and have a way of silencing dissenters. Maybe she’s a secret agent and is hoping to find Peng Shuai and smuggle her back to America.

Root for Chloe Kim.

I have to admit I haven't been following too closely with the posturing and such. I just thought she could be someone the young women in China could look up too much like with what Yao Ming did for basketball in China. But I do understand that young women in China do what they are told.

My daughter is a soccer nut and hates the idea that she would "play" for another Country.

I couldn't give a rats *ss about any of this crap. I just want to see the world's best athletes compete at their events that they've been training 4 years for in a wintry wonderland setting.

My problem with these olympics is why TF would you have a winter olympics where you have to make all the snow? They're having the big air competition in an old electric plant with 5 nuclear type steam structures in the background! And the announcers are trying to sell it as a spectacular scene. On air version of getting hotboxed. The entire bobsled course is enclosed. I assume for refrigeration purposes.

I get it; she's a star and very likable. But, China has a lot of issues and this won't do much to change opinions. She can really only do this becuase she's from the US. Again, Peng Shuai has been disappeared/brainwashed for the most part and where is the outrage? Moving on....

I just heard that a U.S. speed skater was delayed in getting to Beijing due to some COVID. o_O testing horse-a$$. He just flew from Utah to Paris to Beijing. He arrived in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. today, local time, without his luggage. He skated tonight using blades borrowed from a Latvian skater.

I happened to see this Olympian's performance, Kamila Valieva. At 15 they claim she's the greatest figure skater ever. Her performance leaves little doubt. Don't know much about figure skating except Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton, and the baseball bat incident.

And Don't throw Flags the young lady is only 15.

Here's a link to one of her Olympic Routines.

Now, I see an American competing for Russia in snowboarding because he felt the US was not competed to support the sport/ him.

This happens in tennis a lot too. For every Navratilova who bolts to the US you have a Mary Pierce who plays for France. A lot of it is about opportunity/support, but in Gu's case, she at least lived in China for a bit, so she's not naieve to what it's like there. I still find it odd, but whatever.

When I worked at Hershey Park way back in the day, we used to eat lunch in the arena sometimes when they had figure skating practice. It was fun to watch people take big Ls. I'm slightly more mature now but not really.

RCS!!

Bringing home a silver in super G....what a run.
Great to see an East Coaster get on the podium in a speed discipline (DH or SG). Most of our top speed guys come from the West. But, these conditions in China, like I’ve mentioned before, favor anyone who grew up racing on that Eastern man-made snow/ice crud. Given that he grew up in VT, he probably felt at home on that hill yesterday. He took a great line down the course. Awesome to see.

Like the many Team USA athletes who were not born there?

Gu also exclusively trained in the US which makes sense, since she’s an American citizen by birth. I also read she has massive endorsement deals with lots of big Chinese companies and well, you see where this is going. If she were to compete for the US she’s just another gold medal winner who will be forgotten until the next games. In China, she’ll have staying power.

Shocked that they can actually measure a .04 seconds difference. Wonder what the difference in distance is.

It’s not much, though the distances of such small time intervals can be surprising given the speed they are moving. A difference like that could come from anything such as who did slightly better at reaching with their hand for the laser at the finish line, or a myriad of other tiny factors up on course even including how they came through the wand at the starting gate.

Btw - I’m not just an enthusiast of the sport but am speaking from years of experience in ski racing.

Well, it won’t be Mikaela Shiffrin. 0-2 and disqualifying herself within seconds on both races so far.

Mikaela skied out of the course only after the first few gates in her bread and butter discipline after her biggest rival had a poor run. She took too straight of a line and had to throw herself to get around a gate and was too late for the next gate. It’s mental at this point.

It totally mental with her now. She just gave an interview where she could barely speak and said she’s now questioning everything- her whole 15 years of what she’s done. Doesn’t sound good for her next event Thursday.

This young woman is the best figure skater, man or woman, I have ever seen. I agree that she is the best of all time. She did some quads (quads!) with her arms over her head, which makes it harder to spin as fast. She is the first woman to land a quad in the Olympics. And she did it at least twice in one short program. She is just as good, in terms of grace and form, as she is technically. She is miles above the rest of her competition.

Gold medal ceremony was canceled yesterday as steroids are suspected. At least one member of the team test positive for a banned substance and four members of the team didn't practice yesterday for their individual competitions including Kamila.

Here's one story but there are dozens out there.

She's ridiculous. And the oldest gold medal winner ever for the US. She's like, 36?
Wasn't she the one who lost a gold medal in a previous olympics because she hot-dogged it near the end of a race and fell? Glad to know she is still at it and brought home a gold.

From the article:

”The unnamed member of the six-skater team tested positive for a substance that was not performance enhancing, multiple sources told the Guardian. It is unclear what the substance may have been.”
