And Edwards snd Kitts have had a great first qtr today … Edwards with 10 pts and Kitts with 7 pts and 5 RBs
Good matchup for them. Germany didn't run a single post-up the entire first half. Everything on the perimeter for them. That allowed Joni Taylor to play Kitts at the 4 and Edwards at the 5. I thought that was an effective lineup, but she went away from it to play her bigs in the 2nd quarter. That allowed Germany more open looks on the perimeter and they cut into the lead.

At halftime Edwards us leading scorer with 12 amd Kitts right behind her with 9 pts. Both having outstanding game.
Could have been even more; Edwards missed at least 3 free throws. If the USA players were better at the entry pass, Edwards would score or get to the free throw line about everytime. I don't think Germany can handle her in the low post.

Noticed this very interesting photo this morning on the FIBA site while perusing the Team USA roster. Joyce and Chloe have shown themselves to be quite chummy lately and with the timing of the birdie tweet coming just prior to the team leaving for Madrid and Dawn saying the commitment should come next month, not long after the tourney, has been giving me the creeping feeling Joyce could be the one in the nest. :unsure:IMG_5665.jpeg

Hope you're right, but this is what an article in The State last month states:Screenshot_20230716_181119_Chrome.jpg

I really do think she will take some official visits. She has done a ton of unofficial visits and seems to enjoy the process. Hope I’m wrong though!

Chloe's efficiency rating was 31. Wow. Granted Germany had no post presence, but neither does the next opponent, China-Taipei. Great opportunity for another stellar performance.

Also, I noticed Madison Booker was wearing a boot today. Could mean more playing time for Kitts and Edwards, depending on her availability.

Also worth noting that Chloe and Joyce matchup to start the game was really tough. She really got the best of all the post players who defended her. She's very experienced and was playing meaningful minutes for Mali in the senior World Cup that involved WNBA players and other top talent in the world.
She had a triple double today.

I hate that we can't seem to get it together for the National Anthem. Germany look united and proud when their National Anthem was played. Our USA team looked like a bunch of bored individuals doing their own thing. One coach ,not joni Taylor, Showing respect ..wtf

Chloe runs the court really well. Watch the last play: even though she doesn't score, she draws all the German players to the paint, leaving her teammates open on the perimeter.

Chloe has added strength and confidence this offseason. Clearly there will be some situations in which she can play the 4. Her size at the 3 is combined with her mid range is going to make her a very difficult match up. Can she defend the perimeter? We know Breezy can.

Chloe, definitely is a 3. I don't believe she is strong enough at this stage to play a 4 in the SEC. I would like to see her more consistent with her out side shot in USA19 play. No crazy with the way Jonie is playing her.

Considering we have 2 players who are 6'5 and taller and definite 5's, that means Feagin and Watkins are the 4's. Not leaving a lot of room for Chloe to play the 4, even if Dawn believes she's ready.

Down the road, though, she has potential to play multiple positions. Kiki was a rather light to play the 4 (the reason she's not in the WNBA, I assume). But, of course, Kiki was absolutely deadly her senior year in the midrange. Her offense made up for whatever she lacked on defense. Chloe has a ways to go to be THAT good away from the basket. She's still young, though. And she's a better rebounder than Kiki at this age. Better ball handler and better at running the court as well (Kiki used to get winded easily well into her sophomore season).

But, yeah, I agree that I would like to see Chloe hit some more perimeter shots in this tourney. We're going to need that from her this coming season.

Madison Booker went out of the game with an injury, a day after she was wearing a boot. You know Texas fans are asking if Joni Taylor would play one of A&M's recruits if they were nursing an injury.

Spot on. I complained about all the guards on the roster as well. To make it even worse, none of them could consistently hit perimeter shots.
If Del Rosario is not ready for significant minutes at the 5, I don’t think they can beat us head to head.

Team USA problems - SIZE

That video forgot about Janiah Barker. I personally don't think size was the issue, more so guards who couldn't buy a basket. That plus them using shooting guards at point guards. That whole thing was a mess from the coaching to the roster construction. Team USA will have to consider creating teams further in advanced to give our teams more of a chance to build chemistry like the other countries do.

The problem is Barker, Jackson and Reese all play the same position. The coaching staff banked on Reese being able to play the 5 as well, buy she's not effective against taller bigs. That left only Betts as a true 5.

Reese didn't make the roster, so I'm not blaming her. Did the coaches over-estimate her ability? Were they afraid possibly having to sit her against taller teams?

And, yes, the coaching staff could never figure out the guards. The girl from Michigan started all of knockout play, but her +/- was one of the lowest on the team.

The only point I disagree with the video is the claim that other countries are narrowing the gap. Maybe a little. But we sent only college players, minus Caitlin Clark, Brink, Bueckers, Fudd, Van Lith. We potentially could have sent a much stronger team.

The video was spot on. USC was too small in the post and could not dominate in the post. Fast forward to this season, Reese struggles against players taller and gained major notoriety in the national championship game on her actions rather than her actual play. The player of that game was the bench player that killed Iowa with 3's. I'm not impressed with her play. We own the SEC.

Another solid game from Chloe today … 16 pts 9 rebounds

Joyce got in foul trouble early but still scored 7.
Top 2 USA players in efficiency for the tournament.

Kitts leads the team in rebounds.

Edwards leads the team in scoring, Chloe is second.

Kitts played the 3 and Joyce the 4 together for a bit today. I was starting to form my own Joni Taylor conspiracy theory; she doesn't want Edwards to believe that she and Chloe can play together. But, I guess, there are a lot players on the roster and she's playing them all. I just hope Joni knows what her best lineups are as the team gets further along in the knockout stage.

Read this on the UConn board from a LSU poster. He is talking about Shaquille Oneal’s daughter but then talks about prospects that we are also in on ….

She is taking all official visits before announcing though some suspect she is a LSU lean for a bit. She is a nice prospect, little raw offensively but athleticism is through the roof and a great rebounder. 35-50 ranking is appropriate of her skillset. Should do well at the next level if she continues to grow. Her offer list has expanded significantly over the last couple months

LSU is hosting Sarah Strong and Koval in September, Joyce Edwards (who is likely SC bound) is coming at some point in October. Cambridge in early November

I haven’t heard anything about O’Neal or Carlton visit dates or if anything is tentatively scheduled

Anyone watching? Joyce and Chloe with great games again today. Hidalgo is all over the court but she seems to force shots and it is not paying off today.

The US has looked great since the first game against Mali. And Mali upset Australia in the knockout stage, so maybe Mali is better than people expected.

My only concern is how soft our side of the bracket is. On the other side is Spain, Canada and Mali. We might not get tested until we reach the final.

Her footwork on that second basket was flawless, reminded me of Boston. Used her off hand to score the layup to shield the defender. Goodness!
I've seen her play other sports in person, but not basketball. My impression of her was she is very laid-back. I thought that might be a negative; HOWEVER, after watching her in this tournament, I've changed my mind. She is so calm when she gets the ball in the paint. Never hurried. Not every player is like that. Cardoso frustrates me at times when she rushes her shot for no reason. It's not like anyone can block her shot.

And I, too, thought of Aliyah. Both are low-key and cerebral on the court. Hopefully, we'll learn that Aliyah is one of her favorite players.

I have also wondered about Joni, whom I like and whose husband was on the staff here, has not played them together. Personally I consider her a friend of our program but it is very odd that they have not seen one minute of pt together. Not criticizing because that may reflect the roles she has set forth for then. Last night Chloe had a block, rebound and a score within about three seconds.
There are some great players on the team and sharing the ball seems to not be a primary approach. I did not watch the entire game but Chloe, and Joyce too, also exhibited the traits a “Fighting Staley”, picking an opposing player up off the floor, hustling like crazy, playing defense and hustling big time.

Chloe and Joyce have played a few times together in this tournament. I don't think there's a huge conspiracy to not play them more together. When looking at this roster, Chloe and Joyce are by far the best two 4s on the roster. So subbing them for each other ensures we remain strong and maintain an advantage in that position at all times.
