#1 South Carolina improves to 7-0 with a tough 77-61 win over Duke in Durham!

Kamilla leads the Gamecocks with 15 pts on 5-10 shooting, with 14 rebounds and 2 steals. Chloe adds 14 pts on 6-12 shooting, with 9 boards and 3 assists. Bree had her 2nd great effort in a row with 13 pts on 4-7 shooting - 3-4 from the 3 - and 3 rebounds. Te-Hina added 12 pts on 3-7 shooting, and Raven added 11 pts with 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

The Gamecocks shot 26-52 (50.0%) from the floor and an excellent 9-15 (60.0%) from the 3-pt. arc. Duke played very aggressive defensively and very physical, racking up a ton of fouls creating a game scenario where the Gamecocks shot 16-23 (69.6%) from the charity stripe compared to the Blue Devils shooting just 2-2. A lot of turnovers for the Gamecocks, but they had 7 TOs in the 1st and 2nd periods each, and only 6 TOs total for the 2nd half.

We host Morgan State Wednesday.....

Outrebounded them by 21. That's definitely a good sign. Cardoso, again, is the player of the game. She dominated Duke's two centers. Their starter, Brown, could barely stay on the floor due to foul trouble. She finished with 0 points and 1 rebound. Chloe battled hard and got into with Donovan and that's what we need to see out of her. Teams think they can bully her. She fought back today.

Too many turnovers, obviously. But give Duke some credit. They are very good defensive team on the perimeter.

The train keeps on rollin'.

Also this was a good measure of our free-throw shooting capability in a tightly contested game. The team hasn't been shooting at the charity line very well all season, and in fact most of the games were blowouts so that wasn't an issue to worry about, really. But we all knew that those blowouts wouldn't continue for every game, and that poor shooting at the FT line could rise up and bite us.

Today was a chance to prove that ominous boding true, and we passed the test. At least for today alone. The team shot 16-23 (69.6%) for the game, which 70% was much better than our season average to this point. But we shot 9-11 (81.8%) for the 2nd half, and 6-7 (85.7%) for the 4th Quarter. So hopefully we can rise to the challenge should that come up again in future games, which it certainly will....

Against UNC we shot 15-22 (68.2%) for the game and 10-14 (71.4%) for the 2nd half. Not the greatest again, but we came into the UNC game shooting 61.2%, so definite improvement in tightly contested games.....

Massey predicts UCLA over Arkansas by 5. Great chance for the Hogs to make a statement.
UCLA outrebounded Arky by 30. So same ole Razorbacks. Definitely not bad, even fun to watch. Just not ready to take the next step to top 4 in the conference.

Rebounding was better due to improved body positioning instead of arm reaching for rebounds like last game against NC.

Cardoso is such a crappy player. How dare she only get 15 points, 14 rebounds and totally dominate the fourth quarter
Please stop with your BS. I love this team, but Cardoso is sloppy under the basket. 15/14 because she’s 6’7! Not impressed. Any big can get that a night. Boston’s soft touch under the basket was beautiful. Cardoso is like a giant crane without a driver.

I don’t doubt you love this team, BUT

Umm, the Duke girl was 6’6”. Let me see if I can recall her line🤔🤔🤔Oh yeah 1 rebound ZERO points and 5 fouls.

I’m sorry Cardoso stole your lunch money or inflicted some trauma on you. You are the one spouting BS. Higher career shooting % Cardoso or Boston? I’ll let you look it up

You sound like Joey’s dad

Chloe has great effort - she's working harder than any other Gamecocks out there, but often she seems to be rushing herself, and gets a bit wild on her shot attempts. Once she learns to polish her moves up while maintaining that great hustle, and gain control within herself, she may end up being an All-American candidate.....
I think she will only get stronger and better. In her defense I think with some of her ugly toss ups she is expecting to draw a foul. She has excellent basketball IQ … you can tell she’s a coach’s kid..
Wasn't Donovan on the U19 team with Chloe and Joyce Edwards? Maybe Donovan felt like she should played more. lol
I was thinking that they obviously didn’t bond while in Spain 🤣. In watching this summer I thought Donovan tried to force things too much.

Donovan only played in 5 of 7 games. 2 games DNP coach’s decision. She average 6 ppg and 2 reb
Chloe was 10.7 ppg 2nd best, and leading rebounder 8.0

Third ranked and undefeated Stanford is trounced by unranked Gonzaga 96-78.
Important to note Cameron Brink asked for a sub in the 2nd quarter, hopefully she's ok. But Gonzaga had a steady slight lead before she left so I don't doubt Gonzaga could have won this game with her in, but margin would likely be more competitive.

It’s clear you think Cardoso is impressive, given your sniveling, but outside of being 6’7, her game isn’t anything special.

She's a great athlete, but hasn't developed a jump shot yet, so she's kind of a tweener. Clearly a wing, but forced to play the 4 because of her lack of a shot. Also, she's a terrible free throw shooter. She actually banked a free throw in yesterday. lol

Crazy stat: We were +27 with Chloe in yesterday, -6 with Watkins in and -8 with Feagin (in 4 minutes. Yikes!). When I watch the replay I'll have to check to see how much Watkins and Feagin played with Cardoso. That could explain some of the difference in team performance when they were playing. But I also think it's a case of Chloe being very effective against smaller players.

So what is the nature of her injury?

SALT LAKE CITY — No. 11 Utah women's basketball junior guard Gianna Kneepkens will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season after suffering an injury to her right foot that will require surgery. Kneepkens will be eligible to get the season back.

Kneepkens' injury occurred in the 87-68 win over BYU on Saturday, Dec. 2.

Kneepkens will undergo surgery at the University of Utah Hospital at a later date.

Chloe gives us somethings Watkins doesn’t. She has a consistent 12-15 foot jumper. We don’t need her to hit 3’s. She knocks down that shot and Kamilla is 1v1 all night. Though not as athletic she is dogged on the boards. Has to play more within herself. She hit a couple yesterday and just thought she could do anything. She is not a shot blocker but moves her feet and contests every shot

They both give us different things that are both effective at the 4 position. Don't discount that Watkins gives us a stronger player at the 4 for those battles where you will need a great defender and ultimate rebounder. Games against Reese and Morrow from LSU and a few other more aggressive low post players, will demand a Watkins and/or Feagin type of banger. I think they both bring an equal balance to that position.

Happy to see Bree Hall getting some recognition.

USCC7.JPG

When the possibility of Morrow and Celeste Taylor transferring here over the off-season, I was not overly excited. It's not that I can honestly say Bree is a better player than either, I just feel like she's a Gamecock. I wanted her to have a chance to start and, of course, play at a high level.

Obviously, I'm thrilled Paopao is a Gamecock, so I have nothing against transfers. But there was clearly an open spot for a combo guard. Taylor, on the other hand, and Hall are similar players.

So, yeah, good for Breezy. Hope she can build on her performances the past week. Remember she hit that clutch shot against Stanford last year on the road. She's not afraid of the moment.

I agree with this. Cardoso need to improve her post move. When she get the ball on the post she need to keep dribbling the ball to the basket.

Cardoso continues to be unimpressive. She’s no Boston. And Raven, dude, please stop the Jason Kidd passing…totally sloppy.
I am not sure what you are expecting. However, her stats up to this point this year are better than Boston's. No, Cardoso does not have Boston's footwork around the basket and she can't step out and occasionally shoot it from range as Boston does. However, she doesn't have to have those things because she is significantly bigger than Boston. At Cardoso's size, all she needs to do is seal her defender and put it off the glass. On defense, all Cardoso needs to do is keep high hands and create a wall around the basket. That is the advantage of having size in basketball. It's like you want to penalize her for being big. That's not how the game works. If you are big, you use it and add to your game from there.

Awesome, reply. Why are we comparing current players to former players. When Cardosa is not scoring, she is clogging the middle, blocking shots and rebounding. She took over the game in the 4th quarter against Duke.
