Ole Miss pulled within one point, but the Gamecocks closed out the 2nd Quarter on a 8-0 run to take a 40-31 lead into the halftime break.

Lots of fouls called in the game - 24 fouls combined, with Ole Miss collecting 15 for themselves - but the Gamecocks not capitalizing on their fortune as well as they could, shooting 4-8 in the 2nd Qtr. from the charity stripe.

Gamecocks struggled in the 1st half from the 3-pt. line for the 2nd straight game, starting 0-5 from the arc before Tessa Johnson finally hit their lone make there....

Cardoso, Feagin, and Watkins each picked up 2 fouls in the 1st half. Kamilla managed to play some minutes in the 2nd qtr. with those 2 fouls, as Ole Miss was dominating on the boards with all of our bigs out. They still out-rebounded us 25-20 for the 1st half, but we'll have all our big girls back to start the 2nd half. Watkins still led the team with 8 pts on 3-3 shooting, in only 9 minutes of court time......

Kamilla was scoreless in the 1st qtr., scored 4 pts in foul trouble in the 2nd qtr., and now has scored 10 pts on 5-6 shooting in the 3rd Period, with 4 minutes left to play. But she just picked up her 3rd foul.....

Gamecocks win 85-56. Ole Miss played a very physical game, racking up 31 fouls, to USC's 17 fouls, which were slightly higher then their season average. The Rebels were also a bit sloppy with the ball, with only 4 assists to 21 turnovers, compared to the Gamecocks having 18 assists to only 10 turnovers.

The Gamecocks shot a much-improved 14-25 (.560) in the 2nd half after shooting 14-33 (.424) for the 1st half, and 5-13 (.385) for the 1st qtr. They shot 23-45 (.511) for the final 3 qtrs. They still struggled from the 3-pt. line, shooting 2-10 for the game, so their team season average will take a hit there...

Yall think Ashlyn starts at the 5?
Definitely

Mizzou at home is an ideal conference opponent for Cardoso to miss since the Tigers play 5 out on offense. She wasn't much of a factor in the first game until the late in the 4th.

UCONN is real thin in the post. Would be nice to have Cardoso to perhaps get Edwards in foul trouble. I think we'll be OK on the defensive end.

btw, Hayley Frank didn't play today due to "injury." If she's truly injured and not sick, I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't play against us. Mizzou has 3 winnable games after playing us.

Haley Frank did not play today for Mizzou. Anybody know anything? Well ask and it is answered. 30 seconds late on my ask

So I saw on Twitter the other day that Lauren Betts was day to day and that she also practiced. She did not appear to be on the bench today. I find that odd.

Cori Close was so emotional in the earlier post game presser I was thinking Betts had cancer and was dying

I haven’t been watching enough of the other games to make an educated guess on these but Fulwiley definitely makes all freshman team and Cardoso should be first team.

Ashlyn for 6th woman of the year unless these 3 starts affect that. She could also be DPOY.
Traditionally 6WOTY awards are based on majority of the season. So handful of games should matter. Someone to look out for though is Correa at Florida. I don't know why shes coming off the bench but she's been huge for Florida.

It will be 4 starts by the time Cardoso comes back, and hopefully she starts for the rest of the season. I understand the fear of both Cardoso and Watkins getting in early foul trouble, which happened in the 1st half today. However, the other team is also likely to get in early foul trouble when both start the game. That also happened today. That allowed Kitts to come in against 2nd teamers. It gives her a better chance to be effective.

And, yes, Watkins would get my vote for Defensive POY.

I was thinking that as well but now it seems to me as if it may have been a suicide attempt given all of the secrecy involved. For her to be practicing with the team now doesn't make sense if it were some sort of serious illness. Just speculation on my part but whatever the issue is I hope she recovers fully and is able to move forward without further complications.

It definitely seems to be mental as a day to day injury would have her back on the bench and a sickness would be over or she would not be around the team. Close says they expect her back at some point this season. I guess they are just giving her the time to decide when she is ready.

Probably not a suicide attempt as that would require hospitalization and a paper trail that in LA, TMZ would have released. I do think serious depression or something similar sounds plausible.

I think DS would like to bring Watkins off the bench. A healthy Chloe would get the offense off to a more fluid start and save possible early foul trouble for Watkins(that could severely limit minutes in the first half) and give that punch off the bench.

That said, UConn is a bad matchup game for Chloe as is UT X 2. Against Mizzou she guards one of the Linthacum sisters, Ark Bama UGA and UK she can stay on the court.

The UConn game will be a fascinating cat and mouse game of lineups. A lineup of Raven, Fulwiley, Hall, and Paopao would shut down their perimeter guard offense BUT only if Watkins can stay out of foul trouble. If we play two bigs, they can’t guard us down low but can we guard them on the perimeter? With Cardoso this is a probable beat down, without her it could go sideways.

Since conference play has started, the offense has actually been better with Watkins on the court. tbh, there isn't much that Watkins doesn't do better than Kitts, save free throw shooting. That's not a knock on Chloe. Watkins is just really good and a year older than Chloe as well. If she doesn't start, it's a concern about fouls. Dawn sent Cardoso back in with 2 fouls in the 1st half. Just show how much she values Watkins. Her aggressive defensive play could be hampered, if she's in foul trouble. There was one instance yesterday when Ashlyn CLEARLY had a clean block and the official called a foul. Ugh.

As far as matchups in the coming games, this is Feagin's time to shine. She's shooting 60% in conference play. This is her opportunity. Hopefully, she seizes it.

Yesterday, late in the 2nd quarter, Dawn played a lineup with Kitts at the 5. It wasn't particularly effective against Ole Miss' length, but it could work against Mizzou and UCONN. It's probably a better option than playing Walker. It's a lot to ask of Walker to play perimeter defense against those two teams.

We did see a 4 guard lineup yesterday with Bree playing the 4 and I believe Tessa briefly doing it as well. Depending on how things go that might be the plan if we have foul trouble. My biggest issue with no Cardoso is the potential foul trouble with Feagin and Watkins.

I think most fans would be surprised to learn that the Gamecock player yesterday with the best +/- was Tessa Johnson.
USCD4.JPG

Surprised because she only scored 3 points and usage rate was an infinitesimal 4%. She was barely noticeable. In comparison, Fulwiley's usage rate was 37%! Obviously, it's Fulwiley's role to come in and be the straw that stirs the drink. But with Fulwiley, Raven and Paopao all preferring the ball in their hands the role of Bree and Tessa is to contribute off the ball. And, wow, Tessa did just that yesterday. She spaces the floor so well. When she hit her lone 3 point shot, the Ole Miss coaches were visibly upset. Her defender was NOT supposed to leave her. Tessa also contributed 5 rebounds, including several key defensive rebounds when she was playing the 4 at the end of the 1st half. She also played outstanding defense.

Looking forward to seeing what she can do in these next two games. Playing her at the 4 is intriguing. Unlikely that Mizzou or UCONN have enough bigs to post her up on defense.

Also, it's becoming more clear what Talaysia Cooper saw before the season started. Without the ability to stretch the floor with her shot, she would have to compete with the ball handlers for playing time. Some Vol fans insist that she always wanted to go to Tennessee and was pressured into coming here. But, honestly, hard to see how much run she could have gotten this season. That's not to say she wouldn't have been very good here eventually. I'm sure she'll be an excellent player for Tennessee. They just need to find some players to surround her.

Were we ever in it for Juju Watkins? 51 points the other day?? Can you even imagine if she were on this team??

If So Cal can build a team around Juju, they will be an unstoppable force in 2 years.

I believe we were her second choice but ultimately she wanted to stay home. She's very close to her family. But given that, it was pretty impressive how in it we were for her. We were the only non-California school in her top three.

Great stats, thanks. Another couple of thoughts.

wonderful sportsmanship, dignity and a little humor by the players yesterday. Marquesha Davis went down midway through the first quarter. We were worried she was hurt seriously as she was surrounded by players from both teams. A towel was even applied to the back of her head. Then both benches starting giggling. She got up and raced to the locker room holding the back of her head.

Her hairpiece had become dislodged and the players surrounded her so nobody could see. She returned a couple of minutes later no worse for hair, I mean wear.

Fulwiley’s stats were a little skewed for the worse yesterday. She was 5-12 from the field, but 2 of those were 50+ foot heaves to end the quarter. Most player pocket those shots to protect % not her.

She also only had 1 assist but that was because Watkins just dropped two passes that hit her in the hands. Fulwiley knew Watkins was open even though Watkins didn’t 🤣🤣Another was a blown layup after a perfect pass.

Milaysia has speed, quicks, and knows how and when to change speeds. She is also an expert liar to defenders about where the ball is going.

Agree on Feagin 100%, she will get her chance to shine now and I believe she will deliver.
