I don’t think Elzy survives unless she scores huge in the portal.

But in fairness she got thrown into the fire. Matthew Mitchell resigned two weeks before the start of the season because of a horrible concussion that required 2 brain surgeries.

She got the interim job but the 2 other assistants Lin Dunn and Niya Butts had been head coaches, Dunn is a hall of fame legend. It was the Covid year, no fans, shortened season.

The roster was odd, talented but no true post. Rhynne Howard was the lead, her talent and needing the ball in her hands sucked a lot of oxygen out of the room.

In retrospect she seems to have always been running one step ahead of the posse. She is good with X&Os but has failed to retain or sign talent.
I heard Mitchell doing commentary on one of Miss State's SEC Network game. He's country as a chicken coup! I didn't know State was his alma mater. I guess he's done with coaching if he didn't pursue that job.

The concussion he had was so severe it led to a brain bleed and the surgeries. It was life altering.

I disliked him as a coach until his final two seasons. He took a hard look at himself and realized he was the reason kids were transferring. Hired Dunn and Elzy as support to help him change culture.

He is country on air but I found him refreshing and genuine. On a side note, I think I am correct in saying he grew up with Andy Kennedy

News you may missed and/or not really cared about part Deux

I screamed WHY did we schedule Liberty? I mean really, can you say 88-39?

Turns out they are 24-7 and in their conference championship game vs FGCU 31-3(with losses to Duke, Stanford and…. Liberty by 10)

Liberty has won 16 in a row, second longest active winning streak in WBB. The last time Liberty lost was to UNF when OMG Wait for it………… Elysa Wesolek went off for 20 pts, hitting 5 3pointers to personally kick their A$$
News you may have missed or not really care about part Tres

Former Swansea star and top 50 recruit Danae McNeal has made the big dance with ECU. She is their leading scorer and a former tater signee.

They beat Houston 46-44 last night in what can only be described as a dreadful display. It was offensive BBall and not in the good sense.

ECU Shot

18-64 28% from the field
1-8 12% from 3
9-22 41% from the line
Had 23 turnovers

AND STILL WON

McNeal did her part going 3-17 from the field and 0-2 from the charity stripe

Looks like the consensus is trending toward Maryland as the #2 in our region and away from Utah.

I would prefer Utah because they have played a soft schedule, they have further to travel than the Terps and they are something new. We play Maryland regularly, including earlier this season.

Maryland is battle tested and won't be intimidated. However, they just don't have enough going on inside the paint to beat us imo.

Looks like we had coaches on hand to watch the California State Championship last night between Archbishop Mitty and Etiwanda. We've offered Kennedy Smith ('24) of Etiwanda and Morgan Cheli ('24) of Archbishop Mitty. Don't know if we've offered Archbishop Mitty freshman star McKenna Woliczko yet.

Kennedy Smith was really impressive last night (30 points, 16 rebounds, 6 steals, and 4 blocks).

Yeah I wouldn't mind an undersized Maryland. They are a tough team but have no answer for dominant bigs. Utah could be interesting, if they are hot from 3 we could be in for a battle. I'm also curious how Pili would stack up against Boston.

Why is there such a long time from the end of the SECT to the start of the NCAA playoffs?

Other teams have their tournaments the week after ours. The Big 12 and many of the smaller conferences finished their tournaments this weekend. Personally I think the extra week give us an advantage over those who played this week.

Being a Gamecock fan for more than six decades, any team with a pulse in big-game situations makes me nervous. I'm not saying that our team is typical; I know we are not.

That UCLA game in the Sweet 16 could be tricky. I think we play Notre Dame in the Elite 8. Won't have to see Stanford or UConn until the title game.

The only important thing is for this team - this particular group - to fulfill its destiny. I don't care how it happens. We're trying to avert a tragedy.
This bunch has been magnificent since the first game of their freshman year when they Lille would have one tournament. They were ripped off in the infamous “kick and push” game the next year and they won it all last year, were barely challenged and haven’t lost since. I agree it would be a tragedy if this team didn’t go wire-to-wire. This group deserves another title. Should have been four in a row actually. So yes…avoid the tragedy.

I love watching Pili play. As much as I admire her game, I still welcomed the matchup because I thought her lack of size, though no problem on offense, would be an issue for the Utes on defense.

But better than playing us, Utah could potentially face LSU in the Sweet Sixteen. Now I can root for the Utes.

I think a lot more people feel this than will admit it. It's a ponderous burden for these young women to bear, but thankfully, they won't have to bear it much longer. It will only SEEM long.

I still seethe when I think about that Stanford semi-final game and those two horrific no calls

Very interesting to see who decides to stay another year. Rickea is on track to be a top 3 pick this season.

This one shocks me. I mean if I thought they had a chance to win the natty next year maybe, but they will struggle more next year in my opinion. Having Tamari back will help but even with her and Jordan they could not beat the top teams. Maybe Jordan will come back as well but they will still need help from the portal.

I would love to see the faces of everyone in the SEC if in a few weeks, Zia, Aliyah, Brea and Amihere all announce "One More Year"!!! Some of these players are thinking we lose everyone and it will be wide open next year. Most likely we will lose most of them but should they say "One more year", it will tick every single one of these players off to go with bringing in another top 2 class. I know there wont be room, per say, but you never know.

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't necessarily want that. We have young players like Feagin, Watkins and Cooper who need to play and develop.

Tennessee is just kicking the can down the road. Harper isn't developing young players. Transfers and 5th year players is not the foundation of a successful program long term imo.

Agreed long-term it's a bad idea and will stunt the team. Unlike these current juniors and seniors, these freshmen sophomores don't have another year to fall back on .

Tennessee also has no recruiting class so they could afford every bit of extra help as possible. Rickea has had a tough time in college and this is the first time she appears to be happy. So I can see why she chose to stay.

First, I already know how this is likely to go so I don't need to be reminded that several of these players are probably leaving.

Philosophically, however, get all you can while you can. One never knows what the landscape will be like (in any situation) in two or three years - let alone longer.

What if we leave a championship on the hanger and then Dawn decides she would like to do something else. Not likely but not impossible, either. Strike while the iron is white hot. I'm sure we could get an outstanding coach, but another Dawn? When will we ever have another Aliyah?

There's no guarantee we will win this year's championship let alone next year. Odds are if most of our seniors come back we will likely see an exodus from our bench. Which could mean we could be starting over in 2024 because we put all our eggs in one basket for one year.

Asking our younger players to sacrifice a 2nd or 3rd year for something they have already achieved is unfair to them and their potential pro careers. I much rather we continue to build our legacy with new pieces instead of getting complacent with one great class and dropoff. Not to mention these seniors have pro aspirations and the WNBA is one of the hardest leagues to make a roster for. This year's draft class is going to be weaker then next year's, so if you're a senior this is the year you want to try your chances.

As for the future talent I'm not concerned, we're still amongst the short list of almost every top player. The same questions you have asked were also asked when A'ja graduated and the program has only taken new heights since. We now have players such as Alisha Gray and A'ja Wilson representing South Carolina basketball at the highest level and thousands of young girls are hoping to follow in their footsteps.

I'm taking the obdurate path on this. I'd take my chances on another year with these people and work the rest out later.

Im not saying I want that, just that it would make other teams and players hate life so much. In ll honesty I think Zia and Boston are gone and should be. However, I think Beal and Amihere could possibly come back. Amihere more so because I think she could really enhance her stock being here and starting next year.
If those came back I could see a starting 5 of Johnson, Beal, B Hall, Amihere and Cardossa. Watkins and Fulwiley first off the bench possibly?

Beal was 7th in ESPN latest mock draft, and that was before Rickea Jackson decided to return. I will be surprised if she's here next year. But only she knows.
