If CJF keeps recruiting OL and DL like he has been, and gets back to recruiting WR at the level he once did at PSU, then all that is left if finally figuring out the QB1 position. If that happens, then I do believe we can get a Michigan-like breakthrough under Franklin (because UM recruits at around the same level PSU does). This year was a step in the right direction despite some obvious roster holes. Gotta level up the recruiting from the past two cycles and I think the 2026 class may be setting up in that direction. This playoff run can pay dividends for a brand like PSU going forward in recruiting.
This playoff “run” has done further damage to the brand.

All eyes were on PSU last night. Could Franklin finally win a big game with similar talent? They saw what with their own eyes what had been a National story for years.

A resounding NO (SOS)!

Are you implying that big wins over mighty SMU and Boise have earned the respect of College football?

If yes, you should take your own advice.

Everyone is laughing at Penn State - and Franklin in particular

So tired of the NIL argument when there clearly are systemic that continue to go on year after year regardless of coordinators. If NIL was such a big deal, then Texas A&M would have had a dozen championships by now.

Wow so you are being laughed at? else what's your point and who cares?? taking it personal are ya?

Sounds to me you need some counseling if you think your "self worth" depends on how PSU wins or loses their football games..........newsflash its a football game nothing more and one you didn't participate in on the field in ANY CAPACITY, so you personally didn't lay it on the line .....just to set the baseline

you can be tired of it --- but you aren't dealing with it either--- so not sure what your point is other than you are not the coach but have no problem saying he should lose his job because you can do so much better?

more cognitive dissonance

Im frustrated with the loss, but this was a really good season for us. We were damn close but we were going to pay for having a poor WR core at some point, and it cost us last night.

I’ve been plenty critical of JF in the past but I would like to see him stay. He is a good ambassador for the program, connects with players, and while I’m as frustrated as everyone else at our inability to win a big one, I do feel that we are trending positively and certainly better off than we have been in the past. We are close. I’m just not sure who we get that is better.

I blame Allar, AK, and the WR coach for last nights loss. I’m not sure why you let Drew throw the ball on that last drive. I’d go run, run, run to use up their TOs and live to see overtime. You just don’t risk it that deep in your own territory when Allar had shown you nothing all game. Just a terrible call by AK.

The WR coach needs to go, like, today. Do whatever it takes to bring in a big name. We are spending $700m on a stadium - spend the GD money to fix our outside weapons.

America was founded on change. Departure from the world’s largest and most successful empire ever.

Know your subject.
Penn State was definitely not founded on change.
I voted “no”, though I certainly have my doubts about whether or not Franklin can ever get us over the hump. I do think the staff did a hell of a job getting the team as far as they did this season with all the injuries and no WRs.

Well said, ro. Franklin is making too much $ to walk away and PSU can’t afford to buy him out. They’re stuck together.
The questions aren’t about last night’s game. They fought hard and were competitive.

The questions are about what Penn State wants to be as a program and whether Franklin can get them there. The 10-year trend is very clear. The current program just doesn’t win games like last night. Period.

Answering all of this is above the pay grade for most on the board. I think Penn State is thrilled to be Top 10 in most years and take lots of $ from the fans and alums. There’s strength there for a bloated athletic department with many mouths to feed.

The fear of a coaching change disrupting that is likely preventing them from going for it the way Ohio St and Michigan would. We are also a mid-tier school that lacks a true bench of top-tier alums and boosters with the deep pockets required to be elite.

Michigan and Ohio St have invested decades in building that. Penn State isn’t as well organized.

I’m clearly not thrilled with the plateau this program is on, but it’s entertaining most years, even if the ultimate outcome is preordained.

Below is a list of the top 15 AD by revenue - from May 2024. PSU is behind BIG co-horts Ohio State (by $70MM) and Michigan (by $39MM) OSU fields 33 teams Michigan fields 29 teams. PSU has 31 teams. Relative to the two other BIG ADs, it has to field approximatley as many teams with between $39M and $70MM less revenue.

Texas as 21 teams
Albama has 21 teams
Georgia has 21 teams
LSU has 21 teams
aTm has 20 teams
Florida has 19 teams
Oklahoma has 19
Auburn has 21
Michigan State has 23 teams
Indiana has 24 teams
Virginia has 27
Florida State has 18

So, not sure if "bloated" is the correct term. PSU fields as many teams as the two biggest ADs in the conference. And gets no assistance from a University allocation (like some schools do).

Penn State more talented, on paper, than ND. Outside of maybe Leonard and a WR, what other starters would you trade for one of theirs?

I’m just tiptoeing back in here after last night’s loss. I’ve read a few sentiments about canning the WR coach. I don’t disagree with that, but is the same being said about the QB coach? Allar has seemingly very correctable issues that seemed to get worse as the season went on.

What I always come back to when this subject comes up -- the cautionary tale of Nebraska. They thought they deserved better and dumped Solich and then doubled down and dumped Pellini and look what they became. Maybe you get lucky and you pull a Georgia and go from a Richt to a Smart but I have little confidence in the decisionmakers to be able to find that gem if it ever came to that. I'm not happy at all about the constant losing in the big spots. It's a tired narrative that allows the rest of the nation to continue to laugh at us. But at the beginning of the season, I thought the goal should be to make the Playoff and win at least one game in it. So now that bar has been set. The goal going forward has to be conference championship first and then national championship appearance as 1A. You have to build that mindset as soon as you get back to State College. You have to recruit for that goal, you have to comb the portal for that goal, you have to hire coaches for that goal, and you have to practice and play with that goal in mind.

Getting $30 million a year in NIL money would help. Unfortunately, that isn’t happening

Totally agree.

The other aspect of this.....what coach is out there at the level that you can absolutely guarantee will take PSU over the hump?

I think coach is fine. Would like to see some stability with the entire coaching staff. At least for a few years.
However I would like to see a new Pope, as this guy apparently doesn’t have what it takes.

Huh? Watts didn’t do much. His most remembered moment from the game will be getting trucked by Warren. Their RT got his azz handed to him all night by an injured Carter. Rucci has been very good since Donkoh went down. Love is probably equal to PSU two headed monster.

Last night isn't on Franklin outside of his failure to locate or develop someone who can play WR. Full stop.

I was all in with Franklin until the week after the OSU loss when he said Sean gets to go out on his terms rather than to start to get Drew ready. I've been out ever since. That's not to say Drew is better than Sean, it's to say that it doesn't appear that Franklin has a plan to get better in the long run, he just tries to go 1-0 and when that doesn't happen, he says "well we have to get ready for ____ next week." . My concern with him going forward is that Franklin, the locker room, and coaching staff have to be feeling this. It's got to be so deep in their brains that they expect NOT to win these games; the second something goes wrong "well, here we go" feeling must hit like a tidal wave. It has to be impacting practice and pre- and post game decisions. You can only take so much loss before you throw your hands up and say, "maybe next year will be better, who wants to go get some lunch?" As always, that was the problem with Joe near the end years. Everything got excused for the short-term and then we hit the iceberg.

And yet, they battled back from losing the lead and a tie game, then falling behind to score 14 straight, to take the lead back. This team battled back at USC, Minnesota, Oregon, and last night. I don’t think this team lacks character or resolve.

That all ultimately falls on the coach though. Mistakes, lack of WR success/development, screw ups…… it’s ultimately the coach’s responsibility.

To often when someone posts disappointment in CJF others are quick t
It's not Franklin's fault that Drew decides to throw into triple coverage. It's not Franklin's fault the DB slipped and fell leaving WR wide open. It's not Franklin's fault the DL had hands to the face penalty. The coach can't control players while on the field. That being said, I don't think he demands perfection during practice which seems to lead to some sloppiness on the field. Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. If practice is sloppy it reflects on the field during games. He seems to be a players coach and great guy and everyone loves him but I am questioning that is doesn't translate to crisp undisciplined play during games. He is not there to be everyone's friend he is there to lead. However, in this day and age of NIL and agents and transfer portal it seems it is a fine line he need to walk to keep players here(and coaches for that matter). I am not ready to move on from Franklin(also, who is out there to take over? Saban ain't coaching again). I am will to deal with the hardships of a coach trying to get over the hump and win the big ones. JoePA went thru it, Jimmy Johnson at Miami went thru, Tom Osborne, etc. It takes time and experience to learn what makes the difference to put your team over the top. The only downside is it seems when one area improves another area seems neglected. For example, the offensive line and running game improved immensely but now the WR room is a problem. QB improvement has been a problem since he got here. At least this is my observation on the outside looking in. I have faith in James but last night was hard to take. Time moves on, Go Birds!!
Yes QB development has been a problem...maybe because CJF doesn't have a TRUE QB coach on staff....just a young man ANALYST/quarterbacks Danny O'Brien.

I don't disagree. What I am saying is that had PSU simply made a couple of plays and won the game - regulation or overtime- the spotlight comes off the mistakes because of a victory. And therefore this thread would not exist.

Yeah, I agree.
It was a tough loss. Two equally talented team played a hard fought game and one team lost. Sucks that it was Penn State, but what can you do? I’m just hoping they can improve the WR room and get Allar confident enough to keep his feet still and trust himself.
