I just rememebered a place (closed now) ///
Lucchetti's Pizza W 26th St Erie PA. In the 80's we used to get this whenever we visited my Grandpa and Grandma (GPa loved bacon on his pizza). Damn was that good pizza.
Any Erie guys rememebr Lucchetti's, or when/why it closed?

Not deep dish but they make a tray with just sauce on it and then take out the tray for a minute or so to put the cheese on then heat it again.
I am pretty sure someone from that family ( Ronnie?) came to Huntington and opened one here. Mid 80.s. It didn’t last for whatever reason, but I liked their pizza. Someone said he moved back up north

Might have... they opened one in york across from the county offices. Not as good as wellsburg or steubenville spots.

Hey, since we’re neighbors, any favorites you might have in our neck of the woods?
Here in mount airy, laurienzo brick oven pizza is good as is mama Angela's. MA is a byob so makes it a nice dinner spot.

Julianos in laytonsville and Gianni in Damascus are solid too

Exhibit A in how to make a pizza sound unappetizing. It's pizza. Let's not complicate it.
Disagree. We are talking about the things that can make a pizza great.

Or can just eat the "NY style pizza" swill that's pumped out in tens of thousands of pizza places across the country.

Decades ago in a tavern/restaurant, Venetian Gardens, in Staten Island. I was only 17 and may have been influenced by the pitcher of beer we were washing it down with, but I have not tasted a better pizza since.

Tonys Pizza San Fran wow impressive crust! And I have eaten 4+ dozen different places in NYC area since the 80's

Just ate at Pizzeria Biddea in Fishtown Saturday night...pretty good ultra thin crust

And for you Home Cooks.....you want to up your game at home for cooking pizza...buy a $60 PIZZA STEEL
Heat oven 500-550F Degrees hour before---then use good store bought Pizza dough or make your own...
Corn meal on the pizza steal--EVOO on bottom of dough--need a Peel--build pizza slide off Peel onto Hot steel--wait 10 minutes---Amazing home made pizza!

My wife's from up the line in Clarks Summit and she makes her own Old Forge pizza. Homemade sauce, shells from Schiff's, brick and white american cheeses. Also, I don't know if it's the best, but the white pizza from the Chinchilla Hose Co. on Fridays during Lent is incredible.

Tony's in the North Beach section of San Francisco. He makes dozens of different styles and has four different ovens (wood-fired, coal-fired, gas and electric) and they're all amazing. My favorites are his Detroit style and the simple Tomato Pie.

I once watched a waiter bring out a beautiful-looking pie to a family, and before they could dig in Tony himself ran out of the kitchen and whisked it away. He came back a few minutes later and told them that he saw it on its way out the door and it didn't meet his standards so he was making them a new one. Believe me when I tell you that the first pizza that was served was something that I would've happily demolished, but it didn't meet Tony's standards.

Sal's in Wind Gap, PA

/endoflist
I used to work at Colonial Academy on Jacobsburg Rd. Sal's or Detzi's Tavern were our go to places when we would go out for lunch. For a non-descript place in a strip mall, Sal's is outstanding!

I also get shells from Schiffs along with their kielbasa sticks. Hell I may head there now to fight the Christmas crowd! I've have had the Hose Co. pizza. Good stuff!

I’ve had bad pizza and good pizza, but the bad pizza was still ok and the good pizza wouldn’t make me drive 30 minutes out of my way. I just don’t love pizza like many people do. It’s a staple, grew up eating pizza with the family once a week, but not exciting

Yes I've had both. A relative gave me 5 pounds of Trovato’s with cheddar this summer as a gift. 😁 Bosaks also has great fresh cut bacon. Riccardo's has good sticks as well.

Tony also has Pizza Rock in Vegas (including one inside Allegiant Stadium). We plan on hitting his downtown location next week. Tony is the author of a couple of books on pizza including the Pizza Bible.

My favorite is a thick crust, square-cut Sicilian pizza. Buzzi’s in Rochester, PA was my favorite growing up.

Not a fan of Pepe’s in New Haven - not bad, but not worth the hype of first pizzeria ever claim.

I have been friends with the original Trovato's for a long time. The guy who bought them out, Brian, has really made a nice niche with his kielbasi recipe. I actually use his seasoning mix to make venison kielbasi and it's better than if i went and bought everything separately. I think he has a secret he wont let me in on.

He is our hairdresser’s nephew, good guy. Also try Bosak’s smoked in Olyphant. IMO, best in NEPA. Carm used to make sure we had our whole rib eye sliced nice for our steak sandwich extravaganzas for the White Outs. They still do a great job now for us.

My top 3:

1. Frank Pepes- New Haven, CT
2. Grimaldis- Brooklyn, NY
3. John's- Manhattan
Sir, great choices. New Haven pizza for me is “all that”, espec F Pepe’s and “Bar” across from Louis’ Lunch (the 1st hamburger made in the US (delish)).
I have a NYC apt (and a non-NYC home) and your NY choices are quite good, tho’ maybe not my exact winners

"'NY style pizza' swill" sounds delicious. Pizza is one of the foods that should not be allowed to be "gourmeted up." By law. If you get all fancy with it, you should be required to refer to it as "pizza style [something something]"

My picks,,,

1...Lombardi's in Little Italy NY...some think overhyped but never had a bad pie there...the coal oven adds to the flavor of the crust
2...Celebre's on Packer Ave in South Philly (and was Whitey Ashburn's favorite)
3...Home Slice Pizza in Austin TX....long shot pick but when I lived down there it was closest to Philly/NY pizza I could find
