Interesting you should ask as I just got back from one of them...."The Sage Room." Excellent meal and service. Wait staff can make a lot of money at that restaurant and many of the other better restaurants. My wife and I frequent HHI quite often. In fact, we are vacationing down there again next month and considering the purchase of a vacation home on the island.
Tell us the specific restaurants/businesses that are bullying employees or engaging in biased practices. We certainly don't want to encourage those types of policies by frequenting them. If you don't feel comfortable naming them publicly. DM me.
If anyone plays golf, lives in the area and is interested in playing 18 next month. Let me know. While I normally play on the island or in the Bluffton community. I have traveled as far as PI to play their Legends Course.
The toughest used to be "The Gaslight", an higher end french restaurant just outside of Sea Pines. The owner hired his staff from NY, France, the Mediteranean, etc. and they were highly trained and I believe they were HHIs only Michelin 3-star restaurant. Rumors were the wait staff also made 6 figure salaries. Had to have reservations there and expect to drop $300-500 per couple. It closed years ago when the owner died.
Alexanders used to have a bad reputation, but again the wait staff could bring home tons of money each night. Wise Guys is also pretty tough on the staff as is Frankie Bones, both of which I like a lot.
My favorites are Sante Fe Cafe, Frankie Bones, Wise Guys, Boathouse II, and, of course, Hudson's. In Bluffton, I like Truffles, May River Grill, Bluffton (Toomer's) Seafood House. and The Bluffton Room (pricey), If you want to buy your own seafood, the Bluffton Oyster Company. At all these restaurants, the wait staff get to keep the money they earned, it doesn't go into a community pot and then divided. You keep what you earn.
