My reasoning:
1 - I care even less about high school recruiting now, and it's become even easier for MSU. Just recruit the base area as always, MS, and the leftovers from surrounding states or wherever a coach has a tie. Plenty of P5 athletes there.
2 - All the guys who spurn us for Alabama and LSU will eventually need to come back (probably 80% at least). A 4 star on the bench at Alabama doesn't exactly mean a guy isn't talented.
3 - It makes all these overpaid coaches work harder. Have we ever stopped and thought about how crazy it was that these guys salaries shot up the way it has, while the workload didn't change for 40+ years until now?
However, it does work both ways doesn't it? The 'haves' will also use the portal to poach the best players. But honestly, unless your team sucks, those guys likely aren't leaving us, and especially now that we have a little NIL to keep them here.
Speaking of NIL, if anything, THAT is what will destabilize the 'haves'. Let's let Tennessee and Texas A&M and Miami fight it out with Alabama and Georgia. It really doesn't affect us, we'll still get the same players we always have. We can strategically use ours to keep current players and maybe pay an elite defensive lineman from in-state or two per year. That said, since we're a 'have' in baseball, we will likely start seeing some top recruits get picked off (Skenes for example). But let's not act like LSU was always out-recruiting us anyway.
The COVID Era has sucked, and I'm glad it's almost over, but it did bring about some needed, accelerated changes in college sports. And now we've got the expanded playoff. The only thing that sucks is these super conferences, but oh well. Omelet, eggs, etc.
ETA: And why does Bo Bounds dumb *** keep saying Leach doesn't use the portal? We got 6 in 2020 and 7 in 2021 (before the immediate eligibility rule), and then brought in 9 in 2022. No basis whatsoever to say Leach doesn't fully use the portal.
