Good night boys. Don't let tonight ruin what was a good season. I know it doesn't feel like it right now but we took another step forward this year and even tonight. WE ARE!
I'm guessing you're around 72. (2025 - 1975) = 50 + 22 = 72.
Notre Dame will get blown out by Ohio St next week. And the only thing that gives me solace is that PSU may have too with the way Ohio St is playing. Not sure if they’re getting closer. This new playoff format proved that they probably deserved a shot several times over the past decade or so. Still, they’re not ready for a seat at the biggest table. Not sure they will ever get back to that level considering ND just did it with smoke and mirrors.
It's really weird why we can't recruit wide receivers and defensive tackles. Not a single reception from a WR tonight that I can recall. Hard to win in modern football without any help on the outside. They badly need WRs, to open up the O
This is where having not one serviceable WR that can get separation hurts Allar. It was pretty evident that ND ran a similar style of defense to OSU and had the talent at corner to be able to lock up our wideouts. The fact that we've gone 2 seasons with terrible wideouts really stunts the growth of your QB.in that last possession when the first running play went well, I thought we could run down the field and try a field goal. When Allar went back to pass the outcome really was likely. Put him under pressure against a good defense and he will make a mistake.
41,000 yards passing in the NFL.Kerry Collins
100% spot on. To me, back up QB Steve Angeli saved the game for ND. He had the defense on their heels and even though they only scored 3 he gave them reason to believe.ND’s sub QB getting the 3 pts before the half was huge too.
Yep. Was furious only a half hour or so ago. I don’t miss the days of fury after tough losses. If I was still like that at my age, I’d probably have a lot of unnecessary health complications. I really want to see State get back to the top, but the sport is so different now, it’s really hard to tell if I’d enjoy it as much as I used to. It’s a lot closer to watching pro ball now than it used to be, so while im sure winning a NC would be fun, it probably wouldn’t be as fun as ‘86.That's a shame, and if you can't put it into different perspective and it causes you more anguish than joy, you should stop. But I think the right answer is proper perspective. Tonight I yelled, I cheered, I was thrilled and furious. And 5 minutes after the game I'm over it. If I couldn't do that last part, and these things ruined weeks for me like they once did, I'd probably stop.
II have this feeling that this loss is going to sting BGJ and PSU football more than just the final score. I think both BGJ and Allar are going to be major head cases in 2025.That’s exactly my point. Well said. It isn’t about tonight. It’s about the longtime trajectory and giving the program a jolt to try and get over this hump.
James had brought a ton of good. But it has to be hard for him to get out of bed each day and have another go at a problem he’s been unable to solve for 10 years.
He’s making too much to walk away and PSU can’t afford to change coaches. So here we are. Good but not great.

I would feel more for these players, but they’re pros now. If you’re cutting multi million dollar deals then play like it. If you’re getting paid millions to coach, then coach like it. Why the f would we not play to our strengths to win this when we got the ball back. Why throw. He panicked. At this juncture, that should not be happening. Something has happened with mental preparedness and toughness. You can have all the physical tools, but if you’re not it
Like most young athletes today and especially qbs and star basketball players they are treated like royalty and fine China. No grit, little tuffness and no emotional IQ.Can't put this one on James. I didn't have a significant problem with any of the coaching/play calling. Hate to put it on one guy, but Allar just failed. I would not want to be the team drafting him in the first round next year, because someone will. I've felt for years that he has every physical tool, but not the head for it. I don't mean intelligence, I mean confidence, moxie, calm under fire, etc.
That’s another playoff berth schedule right there.II have this feeling that this loss is going to sting BGJ and PSU football more than just the final score. I think both BGJ and Allar are going to be major head cases in 2025.
Let's look at the schedule shall we....

And even then you still had a chance to take it to OT instead …that I might put on Franklin after the defense saves you you have a chance to reset in OTStory of the game: squandered opportunities.
Penn State completely controlled the first half, but the offense is so anemic, they could only manage to put 10 points on the scoreboard.
Penn State gets the ball with 4:30 remaining in the game, putting them firmly in the driver's seat to grind the ball down field and chew clock, and they get held to 3-and-out.
Then, against all probability, the defense pulls the biggest stop of the season out of their butts, and Allar wastes no time in throwing the game away.
A spectacular choke in every sense.
Poor pass to 10 hurt. Slow to adjust to 3rd quarter momentum hurt. DB falling down giving them a cakewalk TD hurt. And of course, the untimeliest of int’s hurt. Put it all together and somehow ND used duct tape and superglue to manufacture another unlikely W. So much head scratching.100% spot on. To me, back up QB Steve Angeli saved the game for ND. He had the defense on their heels and even though they only scored 3 he gave them reason to believe.
Drew was the 3rd best QB that played tonight.100% spot on. To me, back up QB Steve Angeli saved the game for ND. He had the defense on their heels and even though they only scored 3 he gave them reason to believe.
Which would have been even worse for PSU and Franklin long termNotre Dame will get blown out by Ohio St next week. And the only thing that gives me solace is that PSU may have too with the way Ohio St is playing.
Franklin didn't throw the ball. And even then you still had a chance to take it to OT instead …that I might put on Franklin after the defense saves you you have a chance to reset in OT
There's one particular position coach that hasn't changed...Oh, I think tonight was on a few key player mistakes. Allar had two awful throws that lost the game and two others that were saved by ND penalties.
But the trend of this always happening in these situations is obvious. I am sure Franklin is as frustrated as anyone.
How do you change it? They’ve charged players, coaches, schemes and here we are.
Try to keep up. I simply suggested moving Terry Smith from DB coach to WR coach...a position he played at PSU.I believe Terry Smith is the DB coach.
I'm not going to get on Drew and everyone wants to blame Franklin, but Drew hasn't played well against Ohio State, Michigan and tonight. He balled out against USC but your QB has to play well against your best opponents in big games if you're going to win. Can't put this one on James. I didn't have a significant problem with any of the coaching/play calling. Hate to put it on one guy, but Allar just failed. Need to keep shopping the portal. Should be an under appreciated kid out there willing to take a shot on a team who made the final four. It's really weird why we can't recruit wide receivers and defensive tackles.
That play had only one destination -- Warren was going to run a rub route that got him into the left flat for the first down. ND read it like a book and blanketed Warren on 3rd down like a good defensive team should do and they bumped him all over the place so he couldn't get open. Once Warren was locked up, there was nowhere else for Allar to go because that play was designed for one option. Against every other team except OSU & ND, that's probably a quick completion and we've got the first down.Never will understand rolling a right-handed QB to his left, especially when it's the short side of the field, on 3rd down
Spot on. Hard to tell if he can improve this part of his game…he’s got all of the physical tools to be great, but that mental part is tricky. Sure doesn’t help that he doesn’t have any WRs. Not making excuses, but also don’t want to give up on the kid.I'm not going to get on Drew and everyone wants to blame Franklin, but Drew hasn't played well against Ohio State, Michigan and tonight. He balled out against USC but your QB has to play well against your best opponents in big games if you're going to win.
Tis true. PSU's recruiting has seemingly benefitted from the Final Four appearance,Which would have been even worse for PSU and Franklin long term
Ah...sorry. misunderstood "move".Try to keep up. I simply suggested moving Terry Smith from DB coach to WR coach...a position he played at PSU.
Haven't read the whole thread. So forgive me if I repeat. Disappointed, but not destroyed. Couple key factors and that's all it takes in a close game.
Lost the middle 8, badly
Came out flat after halftime, recovered, but if we win the 2 first 2 series, it's game over
Love the way Drew Allar plays, but please learn the check down.
Didn't understand not going back to Singleton in the flat or the wheel route
2 good passes and it's at least one TD and a really long gain
Love Kobe King, but you can't expect your MLB to guard running backs and tight ends 20-30 yards downfield.
Wide receiver! Everything's been said. No catches. Tough to establish anything.
I'm not a "Fire the Position Coach" guy. But, something needs to change. Technique, players or scheme
The drive before the last interception was a killer. really thought we'd grind out a 5-minute game winner.
Never will understand rolling a right-handed QB to his left, especially when it's the short side of the field, on 3rd down.
Positive - offensive line is not an issue anymore
Positive - I've been critical of Thompson. He punted well the last 2 games.
Positive - Sheer joy watching Abdul Carter play
Positive - Sheer joy watching Tyler Warren play
So, we'll see who goes, who stays, and who comes in.
And, I'll be rooting just as hard next year when Nevada comes to town.
Why didn't we go back to it?Now that's a great way to beat the blitz!
Hard to blame the wr room when it is rare they even get a target.....unfortunately Justin Shorter was correct when he said PSU can't develop a wr. Did Clifford get any targets? Not a single reception from a WR tonight that I can recall. Hard to win in modern football without any help on the outside. They badly need WRs, to open up the O
We’re pretty conditioned to blame the coach around here, but I put this one on the players. You’re absolutely right that it was a very poor decision to attempt that throw, but I have no problem with them playing for the win. Why? Why even attempt that throw? You have the better defense, you have the better offense. Go to overtime and win the game. Terrible decision by the head coach, terrible decision to throw that ball.
Here are Todd’s PSU statsHe's no Todd Blackledge. Joe would have told him early in his career.... "Grow a Brain or yer gone".
No, he didn’t. However, as a highly paid head coach don’t you have to tell your QB, above all else, not to do exactly what he did. I understand trying to move the ball into field goal position there, but you have to make sure that the worst thing that happens is you go to OT. He should have been told, no risky throws. If it isn’t there throw it away or take the sack. I blame the coach more than Allar.Franklin didn't throw the ball.
He's beyond learning the QB position at this point.Allar played so bad that if he just plays average PSU wins by 10 or 14 and you have to get to OT- No way you can throw that pick at the end. Hopefully he learns from it at gets better next year.
I’d say 4th. Warren took a couple of snaps, was going to throw a pass - made a GOOD decision to pull it down when it wasn’t there, and ran for 9….. better decision making than what we saw at the end….Drew was the 3rd best QB that played tonight.
