Yesterday was a really ugly loss, there is no improvement in sight, and you want a new coach. OK, I'll bite- who?

The logical criteria-
1. Someone who we could actually get (so no Dabo, Saban, or Andy Reid)
2. Someone who is demonstrably better than CJF
3. Someone who would maintain/restore what we used to call success with honor

I'll hang up and listen.

The pitchfork crowd thinks otherwise- I just want to see the names. Maybe there is somebody better out there that I'm not aware of.
The pitchfork crowd are emotional twits. Those people act like PSU just lost to Rutgers. They can moan and groan all they want to, but nothing is changing over a 8 point loss on the road to a pretty good team. It sucks they lost, but look at the teams that actually do win the MNC....for almost a decade now those folks have had elite QB play and elite WR play. Look at the NFL...if you don't have both you're not going to with that title. Who was getting open yesterday? Can we even name one contested catch this year by a WR? Just one...maybe there is one I missed. If people want to play fantasy land like they have some magical power to get JF out and some better option in they can have at it.....I'll stick with reality.

Whoever it is, the name is not obvious. In the not too distant past, the obvious choices (the Sabans, Swinnys, et al) didn't leave there programs. Recently we've seen some of the obvious choices switch programs e.g. Fisher and Riley. Neither have quite performed to expectation.

The question, then, is how does PSU find the next Kirby Smart? The better question is do you trust those making that decision.

Criteria’s 2 and 3 don’t mean much - unless you can define ‘demonstrably better.’ New coaching hires are a risky proposition - but the numbers don’t lie - they either win big early or not at all (Harbaugh may buck this trend though if he stays at UM). Franklin was more a ‘hot name’ than ‘demonstrably better’ than OB save Franklin actually wanted the job. I’d look out for productive coordinators looking to move up and go from there. Riley, Smart, Day - all coordinators under top tier coaches. Or you look at Tomlin when hired - he was the DB coach for Minnesota. You won’t know unless you try and trying pays off for programs who don’t settle for mid - Georgia and LSU come to mind.

Either way, LaJolla is right - nothing happening anytime soon.

Discussing a move now is irrelevant because of the financial ramifications. There’s no way PSU can sniff a buy out for several years. Thanks, Sandy.

Saying who’s the better guy today is also irrelevant. The question is who’s the better guy in 3-4 years is the real question and that picture is a lot less clear.

That will keep this debate hot for years. 😁

Think about it. Every team ranked below PSU would be delighted to be in the position at this point in the season to likely finish 10-2, and potentially even 11-1. It might take a deal with the devil, which never ends well, to consistently beat top 5/top 10 teams . PSU has good players, maybe OSU was a wake-up to coaches and players that they can't keep doing the same things and beat the top teams. In the mean-time 11-1 or 10-2 is realistically on the horizon which ain't so bad.

Can’t recall where I read this, and apologies as I cannot find it to clarify my numbers.
Since 2000 there have been 5 different teams win the B1G.
In that same period there have been 11 teams win the Natty.
That leaves a lot of teams on the outside looking in, and Penn State holding a 10-3 or 11-2, ain’t all that bad.
I live in Ohio. Am I happy to be dealing with the worst fan base in CFB? No! Do I enjoy the record against top 10 teams? No! But Penn State’s situation isn’t horrible.

A really good candidate is already on the staff and he's been mentioned on this thread already.

However, I'd caution y'all that you don't want to be Nebraska -- so spoiled that 10-win seasons aren't good enough anymore and then you start a revolving door that sends your program into the crapper for decades. The goalposts get moved next year with it becoming a 12-team playoff and a 10-win team should be good enough to make that field. But as we know, Franklin can't win the big game so we can only hope that by the time we get to that point and we're lucky enough to qualify, the players will be so good that they'll win despite the windbreakers & hoodies on the sideline messing it up.

The question isn’t about how many teams would love to be where we are now. The question is about how do we get to where we aren’t. Franklin is the perfect coach if your aspirations are tier 2…it’s actually a pretty lofty accomplishment. But we (like most would be) are greedily looking to jump into the rarest of air…we were there once when CFB was a very different entity. Getting there now is something new, and maybe the powers that be are simply content with our current lot.

If the only choice is a scumbag like Urbs, I'll opt out of following semi-pro football and just stick with the NFL
This is pro. Always has been. Urbs isn’t my choice, but enough is enough. This school bent over backwards to do things the right way, and it backfired spectacularly. CJF is a good guy, but It’s very hard for a good man to be king.

LOL, ok you used an "i" I use an "a".
The same group is here after every loss calling for Franklin to be fired, they've been doing it since 2015.

Well it’s hard to make contested catches when the QB is missing the receivers by 5 yards

And a ton of schools would go crazy for that opportunity. The losses to OSU and UM suck, but these dramatic overreactions are the worst IMO. People want to step back, have at it. PSU is not in an awful spot right now.
