I just don't understand what Saquon thinks he'll gain by sitting out. He has zero leverage. He can't force a contract now that he's been tagged. He needs to sign that tag, report to camp and have a great year. The longer he sits out, the more likely he's unprepared for the season which can lead to 2 things...injury or a down year, both of which will hurt him in free agency.

Sign the tag.
He should play and keep the team captainship to show the world how ridiculous the Giants are in they want their team leader and offensive glue to be stuck on a franchise tag. It really does lack basic respect.
He is a high -profile, good-looking charismatic guy. He’ll make $10M in ad/sponsor $.
As the year rolls on, stop doing press and team-run events until he gets a legit contract.

Yeah, word is he lost about $5mm in endorsement money after he put $10mm into Bitcoin in 2021. But, doesn't $10mm seem low for endorsement money for someone like Saquon? I remember Ivan Lendl making $6mm a year back in the late 80's from sponsors...

He made endorsement money before he made the call to take it all in bitcoin

Saquon makes an estimated $10mm p.a. from endorsements, which isn't bad for a football player. Soccer, tennis, and basketball players have the largest endorsement contracts. Football players don't do as well, except for QBs.

There is no free agency if he has a great year. They'll tag him again for 2024. His best play is to train on his own and sign the tag right before the season starts. Why risk getting hurt in OTA's when it's clear the team doesn't have your best interests in mind?

If he signs the tag, the money is guaranteed. If he is injured working out on his own, he's SOL.

Just curious - why is this smart on “both sides” ?
My guess is it's the only way to get Saquon into camp on time so it's smart on the team side. Saquon gets to save face and make $900,000 more than the tag. The issue is it pushes his 2 tag years to 2024 and 2025. Maybe there was a handshake deal that they won't tag him again?

Thanks
And I was wondering just that - if it pushes his tag years back how would it be good for him.

Real "smart." Barkley signs for less than he was previously offered/ Probably continued taking advice from the person who put him into Bitcoin.

I guess Saquon never took Carl Nassib’s wealth management course.

Essentially, the Giants are paying him $900,000 to participate in camp with $2mm up front. How long before he gets a new agent(s)?

$10 M in endorsement money for a football player? That is HUGE.
For a non-QB, almost unheard of (In fact, I wouldn't take it on face value that it is even at that amount. It could be - being in NYC certainly helps - but there is often some creative accounting/PR involved.)

Most of it comes from his Nike contract at $6mm+ p.a. Has two years remaining, which is another incentive for him to get on the field.

So if Saquon has a great year and the Giants don't make the playoffs he doesn't collect all or part of his incentive money?!?

The kid backed himself into a corner and had to save face. After all the build up and public airing of dirty laundry, this is the contractual win equivalent of a wet fart for Barkley's camp. Those incentives are 50/50 at best and highly dependent on a host of factors outside of Barkley's control.

Selena Gomez gets $30mm for two years from Puma. Something doesn't add up here....

This is Marketing 101. Any mass consumer fashion brand like Puma would much rather have Selena Gomez than Saquon Barkley. Contract values bear that out.

Selena has a much larger audience than Saquon.

How is that possible? I love Selena but she's in one TV show and occasionally releases a new song (hasn't released an album since 2020). Barkely plays in the richest pro sports league in the world and in the biggest market in the US. There are zero NFL players on the top ten list of highest athletic endorsement deals.

Instagram stats as of right now:

Saquon Barkley 2.5M followers
Selena Gomez 426M followers

It’s one data point, but answers your question.

Are you serious? You think millions of teenage girls are following Selena Gomez or Saquon Barkley? You guys need a reality check. Not everyone worships football players.
