Sorry for hiatus. I’m not in jail😂
Hear me out.

Buckeyes play IU and Michigan the next two weeks. Let’s say they win both. Why risk another GM to get 1 seed?

If they get 1 seed they prob have to play Bama/ND winner and Oregon to get to title game.

If they get 5 seed, they would get Boise St at home, BYU and Oregon to get to title game. Which road is more difficult?

Not sure they have a choice. Opt out would be a forfeit IMO.

If this is what you are bringing to the table, go back on hiatus.

let's say they CAN opt out. What stops PSU/Indiana/Oregon to opt out as well, and so on until we've got a Maryland vs Nebraska BIG "Championship" game

Except that the vast majority of the time (15 times in 24 opportunities) the "borderline impossible" is exactly what happens.
Otherwise, yeah.

The outliers sear in one’s memory. Georgetown beat Villanova twice before the tables turned in the final.

The BIG front office has a history of making decisions that favor Ohio State. The others….not so much.

I feel like they might get rid of conference championships at some point. Its a disadvantage to play in one and lose vs. being a 5 seed and not playing in it at this point.

Of the 4 top teams in the Big Ten this year - Oregon, OSU, Indiana, and Penn State:

OSU played all three of the others.
Each of the others played ONLY OSU.

I know it is hard to project which teams will be strong/weak from year to year - who would have figured Indiana would have as many wins as USC and Michigan combined? FWIW: If one would have expected Michigan would be a top team, OSU has them on schedule as well (Oregon and Penn State do not).

If that was PSU who had played all the other top teams, PSU fans would be screaming about how unbalanced the schedules were.... and they would have a point.

BTW: The beauty of super-conferences doesn't end with the Big Ten.
There are three teams battling it out for the ACC title - NONE of them have played one another, and none of them will play one another, during the rest of the regular season.
"Tie-breakers" to get to the championship game could look like Chinese calculus.

I believe conference championship games have exceeded their useful life. Unfortunately, I also I think conferences make too much money off those games to let them slip away.

I’m talking Oregon v OSU, KC v BUFF. The best of the best. Not Steelers v Dallas etc
Doubt very much OSU beats O 3 times

After winning the first 2?

While playing three times in a season doesn't happen all that often, the team that wins the first 2 (in football anyway) has a huge advantage wrt winning the third, historically - and as would also be suggested by common sense. Why would anyone think differently?
A couple years dated, but shows the facts: How Many Times Has an NFL Team Beat Another 3 Times in the Same Season? - Sportscasting | Pure Sports

(And any two teams playing for a third time would, by default, be good teams, as they would have to be playoff teams - in the case of college they would have to be both playing in conference championships AND playoff teams)

Yeah agreed, this myth has been dispelled before, especially in the NFL. Pretty sure there are numerous cases of a team beating another team 3 times in a season. This reminds me of the popular super bowl bet of "will a team score 3 times in a row?". The common reaction is that that seems really unlikely, but it isn't. It happens a lot.

SEC already hard at work gaslighting everyone about the strength of their conference; if only 3 SEC teams get it, they’re gonna explode.

To be fair, they have a valid point. Their conference is eating itself this year and a bunch of teams already have 2 losses. If you look at their schedules, most have played multiple ranked teams. If you look at Georgia’s schedule in particular, they have played multiple ranked teams and several on the road making their strength of schedule the top in the country. Contrast that to a team like ND or Indiana, whose SOS is 73rd and 100th respectively. Now, I don’t feel bad for Georgia, 2 losses is 2 losses, but I would not want to see PSU draw UGA in the first round. That would be a rough first round game for anyone.

“To be fair?” All due respect, we need to ditch that attitude. Rationality has fled college football and let’s not be the ones to bring it back.

No doubt they would explode - though I expect the will get 4 in (and not detonate so much - though I expect there will be some grumbling about seedings).
That said, barring a ND loss there are only 8 spots available for the SEC and Big10..... and the Big10 will get four barring Indiana being dropped like a hot potato if they got knocked around by OSU.

They could make an argument for 5 (a pretty strong argument) - so IU fans shouldn't be making their playoff reservations just yet (and if they get knocked around by OSU may need to root for USC to knock off ND).

After watching Oregon a little yesterday, I think OSU wins comfortably in the rematch.
The same OSU team that struggled against Nebraska? Every team has down games, especially on the road. I wouldn't base anything on a sample size of 1.

Or the same OSU team that only lost to Oregon by 1 the first time at Oregon. Sample size of 2.

So, you are concluding that OSU would win comfortably because Oregon struggled in 1 game and OSU had a close loss to Oregon? That doesn't make sense.

Also, Oregon got intercepted in the red zone. Things didn’t go their way but they won anyway.

Are you arguing just for the sake of argument? If so, I’ll pass.
