I support the university, because it educates people. I don't support only the football coach, or only the football program, or whatever ... I support the education of young adults. That's not a cult ... unlike you and yours sitting there talking about "a once great program and an even greater leader." It's beyond creepy.
Well in case you have not noticed, the university is in major decline (vs the upward path it was on until 2011).

So perhaps you and your fellow cult members need to provide more support?!

The only fans that were blamed, were blamed for being mindless cult members ... like you're showing yourself to be here. "We must all worship the leader! Nothing matters other than the leader! The program is nothing without the leader! Long live the leader!" It's frightening.
It might be frightening to you because the university as an educator and as a football program has plummeted since that leader has left the scene.

Those are the facts.

I guess that is why you stoop to name-calling.

But they will get older and, in many cases, football will become more important to them. Many young people have a lot more going on in their lives they’d rather be focused on.
Maybe. I would not wager on it.

From the THON website: all donations to the Penn State Dance Marathon and Four Diamonds are tax deductible. Our federal tax ID Number is 24-6000-376.

"Since 1977, Four Diamonds has been THON’s sole beneficiary."

"All monetary donations above $25 will be receipted by The Pennsylvania State University. Please contact Finance Director, at [email protected] with additional questions"

From the Four Diamonds site, the W9 is from Penn State and they get their IRS status from Penn State.

I would…it happened to me personally. When I was younger, I would watch a game of if I didn’t have anything else going on. As I’ve gotten older and have more free time and money, it became way more important to me.

Joe was too old to understand the issues and the risk to the school and program. That's why we shouldn't have an 80 year old running the program. Hell, we shouldn't have had a 70 year old running the program. In the end, JoePa did as much bad as good to the program.

Making donations to NIL, THON, and your local chapter are commendable. THON is a very noble donation. I was taken aback by a few in here last year that said they no longer donate to THON because of the BOT, which boggles my mind at the logic. I can’t speak for anyone, but myself. I have no harsh feelings toward Joe. Quite the contrary. Joe was a great educator and motivator. A fantastic coach and a fantastic role model for young men. He was one of a kind and is a legend because of as many things off the field as he was on the field. My only complaint towards Joe was that he stayed too long. I was, like many, of the mindset that he earned the right to leave when he saw fit. Unfortunately, I don’t think he was able to recognize when it was time to step away. Further, this inability to recognize that bit him royally. My frustration is with those that are still holding on to a grudge 14 years later. Some, so much so, that they criticize EVERTHING PSU. The school, the BOT, the president, the professors, tuition, new hires, stadium renovations, Franklin, the players, new development in town, etc. It’s tiresome and some do it on a daily basis. I can’t comprehend that logic and I also can’t comprehend coming here on a routine basis to profess it. I would imagine none of you care how I feel, so I wouldn’t throw my anger out to you on a specific subject. Now, I also recognize some do it to stir up the mob mentality. I get it, I just don’t think doing that here accomplishes anything other than more frustration. To each his own. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I hope those that have a negative attitude on all things PSU can find something more enjoyable to spend their time on.
I no longer give to Thon because after 2012, I stopped giving to anything except Thon. Afterward, I received a form letter signed by Rod Erickson thanking me for donating to Penn State ( It’s all Penn states money), and acknowledging the good work they were doing to move PSU forward. It was patting themselves on the back after trashing the Penn state culture. I shared my thoughts with many in university development, who shared that they all felt that by giving, I was supporting what they do. I began sending all my thon money to the Jimmy fund , and do to this day. As a Massachusetts resident, it makes more sense to me. Call me petty, but I’ve posted before, the Paternos are better people than me

Maybe the younger fanbase will be better than the older fanbase and rise above it to help the university and football program climb to greater heights. The older fanbase can continue to refuse to donate money as well as continue to ***** about Franklin and the lack of an elite football program…yeah, that’s about right.

No money until Joe is properly honored.

I noticed a downtick, thanks to the previous regime's (including your cult leader) scandal, but no "major decline."

I won't be sending my kids there, but PSU will flourish, without you and your fellow cult members ... unless Franklin does something stupid like hang around WAY too long and let a suspected pedo walk around doing pedo things after he kicked the message upstairs and washed his hands of it.

The football program is thriving. Rebuilt after the rot and decay was cleared out and we brought in a highly motivated replacement. The university, as an educator, will be on a longer trajectory. The general public carries around the ick factor of pedophilia a bit longer, apparently.

Interesting definition of thriving. Beating SMU? Middle to upper middle of conference. 1 victory of note in 11 years.

Wake me when they get to the level of “rot and decay”…current pace as pointed out by another poster is 178 years…I eat my veggies but don’t think I can make it that long!

Public should care about a lot of things. But what does have to do about a decline of a world class public university and mediocrity/treading water in a football program?

Thriving. A top 10 program, Facilities improving, coaching staff improving, support improving ... to the best of our knowledge, we've purged ourselves of defensive coordinators who were winning us those all-important national championships whilst diddling little boys. Thriving.

I didn't write much, so not sure how much of it could have been debunked. Which "much" was debunked? Did he not hang on too long? Was a "suspected" pedo still walking around doing pedo things? Did he relay/kick the message "upstairs"? Did he wash his hands of it after that? Which much? How much much? Do tell.

Here's the crazy thing ... I don't have anything against JoePa. My only real criticism of him is I think he should have stepped aside earlier in his career. But he helped build a successful football program. By all accounts he was a good man who cared about his players. In the whole scandal situation, I tend to believe he was what he was ... a coach and a flawed good man who didn't do anything terribly or knowingly wrong, if anything at all (too murky to say definitively, but I'm not willing to condemn someone without actual evidence).

And, for most normal people, that'd be a pretty glowing review ... it's just that, in this circumstance, I'm up against hero worshippers, who are at least giving him sainthood, if not a seat next to another being they worship. And, to that end, they will fight tooth and nail to defend his honor, even turning their backs on the university (you know, the actual important piece of all this) if they don't meet their ransom demands. And then many of those worshippers will also take it out on the current football program, because they can't bear to see and admit to any success that isn't JoePa's, and no one will ever live up to his mythology, so they must be torn down. No false idols, amirite? And then there's the hypocrisy of how the cult members paint the man, depending on the context ... on the one hand, he's omniscient and omnipotent, single-handedly molding clumps of mud into noble warriors and leaders, and, even more impressive, establishing a world-class university, and everything within it, on his own ... on the other hand, he's just an Italian kid from Brooklyn who was a football coach and didn't know any better, or have any other responsibilities/demands.

It's bonkers. Friggin bonkers.

The one error you makes is to assume that the current level of mistrust of the BOT is all from people who worship Joe. That's simply not the case (maybe for some--but far from that for all). There are CURRENT things going on that are of grave concern--and this has been noticed by the court system and the press among others. We are a public university--the face of the Commonwealth's education system. Yet we're run more secretive than a spy agency. Why? Public books, public comment, and public voting (at least from alumni) are gone. All we get is "These are not the droids you are looking for".

An offshoot of all this is the passive aggressive cult member. They've determined that an "end around" is the play. Incensed that their cult leader's name was in some way sullied in all of this, and pushing to the side all the other lives that were damaged/ruined, they found an outlet for their anger - the BoT. How dare these monsters not properly defend the cult leader? We'll show them. So after demanding that the BoT stand by their man, and witnessing that not transpire to their satisfaction, they now demand an admission of guilt, and a punishment. Restore our leader's great name, or face our wrath! After again not receiving satisfaction, the cult members launched an "inquiry" into the BoT's actions. Why, if we can't convince folks that JoePa is a golden god, and completely innocent of any and all wrongdoing here, we'll tear down those in power in some other way. And, thus, the obsession with the BoT's operations commenced. The cult members feel that they are insulated from the JoePa blowback, because they are just being good stewards of the university by holding the BoT's feet to the fire and demanding accountability.

No, a post like this counts as being a reasonable person.

I have no problems with folks actually demanding proper leadership and governance. Even the best run organizations can be better run ... and some are rotten, and the cancerous portions need to be removed and the culture reformed. I've had to take on BoDs and the like myself.

It's just that, here, there was no chatter about the BoT prior to the scandal ... and then you saw the hostility build up toward them as the scandal became more damaging to what the cult members held dear. And then you clearly saw "operation retribution" take effect, where, suddenly, the same folks who demanded statues and names and the such, and who openly criticized leadership, were the ones who suddenly cared how money was being spent, and how transparently the BoT was or was not operating. The end game here is to oust the current BoT by any means necessary, and install Paterno-friendly alternatives. Anything else that results from this is secondary, at best. A necessary means to an end. The hostility with which this campaign was launched, and the fact that folks are completely turning their back on those being educated as a way to allegedly get back at the BoT is further evidence that this vendetta is the overriding concern here.

If you are an actual concerned citizen with the well-being of the students in mind, you, sir, are a unicorn. It's clear the leaders of this movement are not.

Here is my opinion about the state of the football program. I believe it has done remarkably well considering the body blows it took 10-15 years ago. It's a top ten program located in an aging State and suffering from a very diminished local recruiting footprint. It's hard to identify another state university consistently ranked so high that has suffered a demise of the local talent pool like PSU. We should be grateful that we have the coach we have given these immutable issues. No scandals, loved by his players, good recruiter, builder of a program.

I attended Pitt in the 80's when they were putting together historically talented teams and were on equal footing with Paterno and PSU for a short time period. I watched the program crumble under coaching changes, alumni meddling and, in the end, wavering fan support. The program is now a shell of what it once was and it teeters on obscurity as conference affiliations continue to change.

The PItt situation is proof that continued success is not a given. There is luck and a lot of hard work behind the scenes that make it go. We should be grateful that we are nationally relevant and now positioning ourselves for a multi-year run at a Natty. The program is not yet at a level we all desire but it may be fairly asked whether that is even possible given the advantages of schools like tOSU and Georgia. IMO, "mediocrity/treading water" is not reflective of the current status of the football program.

Now, as for the admin of the school, from a distance there appear to be some major headwinds and it's not clear yet whether the right folks are in charge to course correct.

Although I felt it was wrong and inappropriate, I do not care anymore about how Joe was treated. I’ve moved on. I still care about what they said about me as an alumni, and how they have treated me and my opinion since then. It’s personal, not a cult

There was no chatter because we all thought the university was following the "Penn State Way" and it really was "Happy Valley". That turned out not to be the case, as we all sadly found out. It was all far more insular than it should have been. Outside input would have really helped. And we didn't know that. Then. But it's the *current* stuff that has me smoked. And you've never answered that except to call people cultists. I have similar fears about where I live--too many of the politicians here in Columbus all went to tOSU or Capital. It can be a bit of a monoculture. And those are dangerous because you get tunnel vision. It's a great place to live. But sometimes people here just don't see things that should be more obvious.

And that's true of the current BoT. Insular, not wanting any feed back, and demanding total agreement. With everything done in secret. It will bite us in the*ss some day.

The only false idol worshipping is you elevating a (mediocre) football program over doing what is right and respecting acknowledging that you would not even have that to worship without JoePa.

Should you not be concerned about the plummeting of the standing of the University - first and foremost? Just so happens this decline aligned perfectly with folks like you who elevated football over honor and achievement in 2011.

A reasonable football cult member. Heck, you can’t even get that right. Pick a school that actually wins a game or two every decade that they don’t have a decided advantage.

Did you attend Penn State? Or are you simply a Wal-Mart fan?

We now have the highest paid Coordinator on our staff? Running out of excuses. What is this advantage that Georgia and Ohio State have (other than coaching/leadership)?

And what about the failing path of the University since 2011? Lack of leadership. What is missing? Well, you can do the math….

Although I felt it was wrong and inappropriate, I do not care anymore about how Joe was treated. I’ve moved on. I still care about what they said about me as an alumni, and how they have treated me and my opinion since then. It’s personal, not a cult
They singled out JoePa to get to the alums. Best part? It was done by our own. Traitors with a poor sense of priorities.

And the results of now quite obvious. Bottom of Big10-level University (used to be beat the very top) with an upper-middling football program. No signs that either are getting better.
