@Tom McAndrew time to start a ‘23 thread. News is rolling in now
My preference is to keep the offseason news and discussion in the previous season's thread. For example, I started this thread (the 2022 Eagles Thread) in early July of 2022, after the FA market had taken place, the draft had taken place, etc.
Oy……
Yeah, some talking heads were giving serious props to the new SF DL.This was always going to happen. Big name on a top defense. I’m surprised it’s the Niners signing him. This will hurt them in other spots like OL.
The Birds just traded up for Davis at DT in last year’s draft. They need to rely on that young drafted talent now. We’ll see what happens with their older vet DTs.Of those leaving:
- T.J. Edwards: many thought he'd be back, but the Birds were not going to pay him what the Bears did
- Hargrave: this one hurts, but is also not surprising. He was the top FA DT out there. I didn't see any way the Birds were going to afford him
- Dillard: I know @s1uggo72 wanted him to return, but there was almost no way that would happen. He's an OT, and if he stayed he would have been a backup. It made no sense for him to resign with the Birds
- Epps surprised me, as I thought they could resign him for an amount that worked for both sides. The Raiders are signing him for $6 M a year, while he played for $2.75 M last year. The Birds weren't going to pay him that much.
For as good of player he is, why is he always getting released?? From the Steelers to the Eagles, yet none of them see like they are trying hard to keep him. I wonder why, I would think there is more than money involvedThis was always going to happen. Big name on a top defense. I’m surprised it’s the Niners signing him. I didn’t see anyone paying him and giving him a starting job. So good for him. Now what happens w Ike?? I thought he had another yr but was too expensive and would be released but so far I haven’t seen that. Perhaps I missed that.Of those leaving:

Javon Kinlaw did not pan out like the Niners had hoped (partly because he was injured too often, but also partly because he simply did not play up to his draft status), so getting Hargrave is a plus. It not only adds him to the Niners but subtracts him from the Iggles. I like it.This was always going to happen. Big name on a top defense. I’m surprised it’s the Niners signing him. Is Miles on the outs?
One year deal from what I gather.it would appear that way, he wants too much money, Penny must have signed a team friendly deal.

Aren't Eagles fans at least a little disappointed to lose Hargrave?
The Niners had that same thing happen with DeForest Buckner in 2019. He was up for a big new contract and, rather than paying him, the Niners traded him to the Colts for the 6th pick in the draft, which turned into Javon Kinlaw. Salary cap considerations drove all of that.disappointed, for sure. but he was the top DT FA available, and the Birds don't have a lot of cap space. The hope of fans was that he'd re-sign for an amount that worked for both parties, but most analysts had concluded some time ago that he was likely to be playing for another team next season.
