Taking 2 in Arizona is huge. It feels like we haven't won a series down there in a long time. Big win no matter how it happened!

I’m at today’s game with my son.

strange game. A few regulars out of the lineup for the Phils. And Wheeler didn't have his best stuff. And the Phils, as happens more often than I would prefer, have too too many strikeouts at the plate, at the 7th inning stretch. But the Phils have the lead, so not all is lost, at least at this point.

Have fun!

It was a good game for several bathroom and concession trips. Not a lot of action, but thankfully they didn’t need it to beat an awful Oakland team.

First time at the Oakland Coliseum. It’s not set up well at all. Reminds me of The Vet back in the day.

ouch. I prefer to not remember the Vet for watching baseball. Sure the amenities were nicer than Connie Mack Stadium, but Connie Mack, and now CBP, were better places to watch a baseball game than the Vet.

Approaching the half way point, there is a lot to like.

1- First and foremost, they have played 12 more road games than home games. Their home record win % is significantly better than their road record win %.

2- If you look at their offensive stats, Stott has over produced versus last year but Harper and Turner should have much better second halves. Nick has a higher avg than expected but his production isn’t unreasonable. If Turner and Harper produce how you expect, they will be better offensively.

3- We all know this season will be determined by the starting pitching. Dombrowski will add a starter so they will improve there. Nola has a 1.10 WHIP but elevated ERA. Wheeler and Ranger look to be hitting their stride and Walker has been a steady #4. If Nola can reduce those blow up innings, the starters will improve. The pen has a stable of big arms and they can be formidable down the stretch. If they pitch to capability, the games will shrink and the starters will avoid that deadly 3rd time through the lineup.

Their record says 4 games over .500 but there is a lot to like. Def trending towards October baseball.

Probably, but it won't be easy. A lot of teams are still contenders, so I don't think there will be a lot of sellers, and there will quite a few buyers. Many of the contending teams have suffered significant injuries to their pitching staffs, so I do worry what the cost will be for any pitching trades. But if you think you can win it all, you (as a GM) have to be trying to add a starter.

People will always want names. One to watch - Marcus Stroman. He has an interesting situation in Chicago. He wanted to discuss contract, Cubs said no at this time. He’d cost a ton, but the interesting aspect would be that he would be an alternative to Nola if the Phillies can’t resign Nola after this season. If Stroman could be acquired and liked it here, it’s a play to consider.

The only story I’ve heard goes back when he was a BLUE JAY. They wanted to do a promo shoot and I can’t remember the details but he couldn’t do it at the Jays spring site in Dunedin. He did it at Jack Russell and all I heard was that he was the nicest kid you could meet. Everyone who came across him said he was wonderful. Doesn’t mean anything, was just something that stuck with me.

I didn’t like last night even a little bit. Ranger was fantastic and you’re 1-1 after 6. VERY winnable game. Considering Monday off day, I would have thought the pen was reset and available. But you go Hoffman? He’s been good but that’s a very high leverage situation in a critical first game of series. I didn’t understand. Then you get Acuna with a base open but pitch to him? I didn’t hear the post game, but i scratched my head a bit. 1-1 with Strider out of the game. I would have taken that but the choices had me wondering what was going on.

Phillies offense stinks again. Same thing every year. Pitching overperforms and hitting underperforms.

They were very fortunate to win the last two games in Oakland with their anemic offense.

Surprised no mention of defense?

Frustrating loss, but through 9 innings you could have said the same thing about the Braves. They had 3 hits thru 9 innings. Nola avoided his Achilles Heel (of late) of an inning where things got away from him.

The 10th inning was a disaster for the Phils. Marte wasn't as sharp as you'd like to see. That said, if Schwarber doesn't make the error, I believe the Phils would have gotten out of that only down 1-0, and they scored a run in the bottom of the 10th, so the game would have been tied.

No shame in losing to the Braves. They are loaded. Did you see Acuna's throw to home on the sac fly in the 10th? Phenomenal!
