UConn in some big trouble. They've been struggling since our game. They scrapped by with a 9 point victory against Xavier, the worst team in their conference that was on a 18 game losing streak. The might not win the Big East tournament at this rate.

No Dorka tonight. I haven't heard why. How bad must DeBerry be to only get 4 minutes against the worst team in the league and her team is missing its starting center?

She hurt her ankle in the previous game and has an ankle sprain. Mind you she had to be my helped off the floor in that game and then later checked back in the game. This is why I don't believe that coaching staff doesn't have their best interest at heart.

I feel for Deberry, she didn't look good in limited minutes but what do you expect from a player that barely sees the floor. I really think Geno dropped the ball when it comes to developing his bench.

We beat Xavier by 40 playing the bench liberally. His team and game plans seem to be fraying. They hit a hot team in the second round and who knows???

It is sorta funny/ironic to hear Geno bemoan his lack of depth. He hardly ever played his bench even when he had a full bench of super talented players. Best five for 38 minutes no matter how bad the opposition.

Through the years he under recruited numbers wise. He never took transfers until Azure Stevenson and she played sparingly and was a first round WNBA pick I do believe.

While he is not a portal tramp (cough cough Kim Mulkey, Kellie Harper, Brenda Freese) he now uses it regularly and has dropped his sanctimonious attitude about transfers.

Also half of his roster is international players, not a knock just a noting of a sea change. He still gets top players but the UConn mystique is smudged.

Of course he gets 10 days of rest and prep after the conference tournament. So he probably gets everyone healthy including Fudd and makes the final four🤷‍♂️

We win the title this year and it’s 3 titles and an *asterisk title since their last championship. The torch is passed but the King is not dead

On the UConn board some fans are angry at him for his post game presser. He called the players selfish. I think he’s losing it! As for Deberry, if she doesn’t move on after this season she’s crazy. Poor girl needs someone who will develop her. When she does get on the court she’s probably so scared she’ll make a mistake that she can’t play loose.

If you read any of the profiles of DeBerry she seems to be a wonderful human being and teammate. Very bright and enjoying the college experience athletically and academically.

My sense is she sees a much broader picture of life than just basketball.

Listened to the whole presser this morning. He did really rip the team. In particular, he tore into Nika Muhl, on the night she set the UConn single season assists record. He also did the carping old man act, “The players today…..”

His complaining makes it sooooo obvious how bought in our team is. To win in BB all players have to make sacrifices in their individual game for the team to win. EVERYBODY on our roster puts team first.

It is my hope that some of these players are seeing it and getting tired of some of it. I would love if Fudd would transfer and come here. The only thing we really dont have is a deadeye three point shooter and she is one of those. I know, wishful thinking, but I never thought Cardossa would transfer much less come here when she did.

Oh ha! It was a snippet of Geno’s press conference dogging his team but also saying he and his coaches aren’t coaching as well as they used to.
Thanks!

I have watched almost all of Geno’s pressers pre and post game over the last 6 weeks about 10 games worth.

He and Dawn deal so differently with just about everything.

His go forever. He at times rambles and seems to just enjoy having the press hang on every word. St John’s was really the only opponent that he was complimentary of, but he complimented them in such a manner as to dog his own team. He sorta threw Dorka u set the bus for not playing last night. He insinuated that she held herself out of the game not the medical staff. He doesn’t whine about officiating every game just ALMOST Every game.

Zia is shooting 37% from the 3 and 79% from the free throw line. That's pretty good for any 2 guard, but especially for a 2 guard who is a tenacious defender and takes the ball HARD to the basket like Zia.

But I understand you were talking about next season. Sure, we could use Fudd then. Personally, I think we'll miss Zia more next year than Aliyah. Obviously, I'm not talking about who is the better player or leader. Just basing that on the current roster construction. The portal could change my opinion.

I have often wondered if Dawn gave Eniya Russell minutes because Dawn wanted her to stick around because she saw ER's potential or because she's on the roster and Dawn feels like she owes it to player to give them at least some minutes.

Well, Her Hoop Stats ranks 137 SEC player in conference play. Russell is ranked dead last!

Russell1.JPG
She's shooting 27% from the field and turns the ball over at an alarming rate, which should be no surprise to any Gamecock fan. So I think her poor offensive rating is well deserved. She just isn't an SEC level player.

I believe Dawn gave her minutes because she feels an obligation to players she recruited and who do what's expected of them off the court to try and develop them. But Eniya would never see the floor if she played for Geno. Bettencourt doesn't play when UCONN only dresses 7 or 8. He would prefer to play Nika Muhl into the ground than let Bettencourt get any meaningful minutes.

In the end, a coach is measured on winning and Geno has done a lot of that. But not like he used to, so it's fair to wonder if his methods are as effective as in the past. Yes, his team would be much better if the top recruits from two recruiting cycles were healthy, but what if they aren't. Continously browbeating the players who are playing in press conferences doesn't appear to be very effective.

I feel sorry for Eniya. I really thought she would have seen more playing time at Kentucky. I do feel that Dawn tried with her ... she even let her start an exhibition game her sophomore year when Zia was out with a hurt leg. She just could never get it together and wanted to shoot the ball too much while also not playing great D in my opinion.

She's a product of poorly coached youth basketball. She has little to no discipline. I listened to Flau'jae interview with Haley Jones and she mentioned that she never really played defense until she got to LSU and I think that's becoming more common.

I think Eniya has potential but she has to apply herself. The few times you played within the flow of our offense I thought she looked ok and her 3 ball was pretty good too. Unfortunately she usually plays a one dimensional fast paced game. It worked for her in HS but she never evolved. She chose the wrong school if she wasn't willing to dedicate herself to defense.

If she's not willing to adapt she should have went to more a offensively oriented teams like a DePaul or a Oklahoma. I do hope she figures it out.

"Fight" in the Kentucky/Florida game. No punches thrown. It's taking FOREVER to sort out technicals.

So when players get a red card, er, get ejected, doesn’t that mean that they don’t play in the next game or half?

I believe they said everyone gets to play the next game, coming of the bench ejections don't carry over. The only player who would miss a full game is the the Florida player that threw the ball and almost started a fight.

Tough break for Florida that all their players ejected play in the low post. The Gators had been much better lately; they beat Alabama and Mizzou to end the regular season.

The announcers said Kelly Rae Finley said the turning point was a 11 point loss at LSU. If they could play with the Tigers, they could play with anyone. The game before LSU, they were down by 30 at the half against us. Finley said a lot of nice things in the press conference after our game (she definitely voted for Dawn and Aliyah for end of the year awards. lol). I was rooting for her team to make a run in the tournament.

Does anyone have a preference for who wins the Arkansas/Mizzou game?

Personally, having watched both teams a good bit in conference play, I would prefer Arky. They are overly finesse and strangely lack the fight of previous Neighbors teams. And I'm not just talking about our 71-17 rebounding edge. It's been an issue in most of their SEC games.

Arkansas has a higher ceiling than Mizzou, no doubt. The Tigers are small and unathletic, but they will compete. And they pretty must beat us to have any chance at making the tournament. I could see them being pesky.

Mizzou for no other reason than I believe we owe them about 20 beatdowns with Sophie being forced to watch

Arkansas seems clearly the more athletic to me.

There's no automatic carry-over that goes with being thrown out of a basketball game - yet..

I was thinking, maybe Eniya felt her earns burning from this message board. She still suffered from many of those same fast paced, low IQ plays but she seemed to calm down the longer she played. She made a few 3s and decided to play some ok defense.

Hopefully Elzy can show her the tape of this game and inspire her to step it up for next season. Kentucky might actually have some good pieces for next season if they continue to play like this.

4 straight losses for Bama. Getting torched by Eniya Russell in their first game in the conference tournament is not a good look. Are they on the bubble now?

The last 3 teams we played to end the season -- UT, Ole Miss, Georgia -- might be playing the best after Carolina. LSU and UGA should be a good one tomorrow.
