That's correct. They couldn't turn it off and on like a light switch because that means all or nothing. They should have thought of it as being more like a rheostat. At least try to crank it up a little bit. 50% maybe. That's better than what they were doing.
Or in all likelihood, they’re getting older and more prone to being banged up over a long season. How else do you explain the cliff they fell off of in the second half?

He looks for Marsh and Rojas to both be moved which wouldn't surprise me. With potential outfield spots to be filled, free agent signings aside, I'm on the Justin Crawford bandwagon. The past couple seasons he's seemed to have adapted well to pro ball. Depending on his spring training performance, I'd give him a month or so in AAA then bring him up. I know all the arguments about MLB pitching vs. MiLB pitching but if they were willing to give Rojas so much playing time, why not Crawford??

I wouldn't be shocked if Turner gets moved to the outfield eventually. He's a liability everywhere at the moment, but overall, his defense is pretty poor at SS. I think they continue to aim high this year with free agents with the hope that Crawford and/or Aidan Miller can help them in 2026.

Painter is the one that I think they hope can step in this year. Who knows, time will tell. Just my two cents. Love Crawford and Miller though. I would love for the Phils to still be playing, and if they would've gotten an awesome OF bat for those two, OK, maybe I look at it differently now. But for the most part, I'm still happy they kept those two at the deadline.

Can Turner play 2B? I might try him there before OF. It sounds like Miller isn’t great defensively at SS either but unless they move Bohm (too early, IMO), there’s no IF position for Miller on the current roster.

If they move Casty, Rojas and Marsh, and let Hays walk, then I think they’ll have $ to bring in a different type of hitter (or two). They need a lot more contact in the lineup.

If the Mets can make it past the Dodgers, and trust me that’s a big “IF”, they will beat either the Yankees or the Guardian’s. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself because the Dodgers, at least on paper, have a complete team both on offense and defense.

I think in the NL East the Mets will be the bigger problem for the Phillies long term. Next year the Mets free up nearly $65 million by getting Scherzer and Verlander off the payroll. Will Cohen make a push to sign Soto and Burnes. If yes, fuhgeddaboudit for at least 3 years, maybe 4.

Highlights from Dombrowski & Thomson pressers today -

1- Entire coaching staff will be retained and back, Thomson contract extended,
2- Dombrowski stressed how hard it is to win and highlighted Braves crazy division run which netted only 1 title. Said you need to be playing the best at the right time, that wasn’t the case this year,
3- Offensively, said they will consider lineup construction but want players to use the whole field more. It was brought up that Turner line drive rate is down and his fly ball rate up; they would like to see that flip. Said Bohm, Marsh, and Stott all need to be mindful as well of using whole field. Sounds like roster is largely set other than CF. Did not commit to Hays being back. Sounds like they will evaluate improvement in CF if possible but want Rojas to improve his short game and cutting down his swing,
4- Pitching, 1-4 set, Walker will have an off season program but is not guaranteed #5 spot. Painter will need to be brought along slowly with his innings managed. I would think it’s a Strasburg like situation where I think they would like to limit him to 125 innings max this year,
5- Pen, said they would like BOTH Estevez and Hoffman back but realistically that won’t happen given $$ necessary to bring BOTH back for multi years.

Stott is a big variable for next year. One concerning stat I saw was that on last pitches of AB’s this year at least 93 mph, Stott hit .200 compared to .319 in 2023. I often noted how Stott struggled with the fastball this year. He needs improvement there.

It’s taken me a few weeks to finally come back to this thread. Only because Painter is our future. He’s about to pitch if you want to watch.

I'd be surprised if they opted to sign Bregman. They'd have to trade Bohm or Stott to make it work. Bohm has better plate numbers, and is younger. Stott doesn't have quite the offensive numbers, but Bregman hasn't played 2nd in some time, and Stott is excellent defensively, and also younger.
