Report: Saquon Barkley rejected Giants offer worth up to $14 million

“Unlike Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs, the other two tagged running backs, Pollard has signed his franchise tender, worth $10.09 million for the 2023 season, and attended the Cowboys' offseason program.”
That's a pretty good deal for a guy that's been a career backup RB coming off a recent surgery.

My understanding is that the Giants can't sign him to a multi year deal now that the deadline has passed. If the Giants want to try to get him into camp on time and smooth things over a bit, they can always sign him to a one year deal worth $11mm with easy incentives to make $14mm. Not sure Saquon would take it without a promise not to franchise in 2024.

Questions that I know have entered your minds, so I’ll just post them here:

If Saquon attends any other college, do the Giants sign him to a multi-year deal that clearly shows respect for his talent and character? Doesn’t this really amount to the fact that the Giants hate Saquon (and, by extension, hate us)?

Lots of RBs not lots of kickers that can do the job
There will be a lot less RBs soon if pay isn't commensurate with production. Kids with RB size and athleticism will gravitate to LB/S/WR in college if this keeps up. As you've all said here, it's capitalism.

From a business perspective that's a reason to pay them less, not more.
I understand (like you said from a business perspective) why RB's are being de-valued. I think it silly but it is what it is.
What isn't silly is that besides being one of the top backs in the league he's, arguably, the best WR and the most talented and productive player on their roster.
The Gian's F'd up twice. They probably shouldn't have drafted him as high as they did with no help around him, and they shouldn't have driven the brink's truck up to Jones house. Jones is an avg. QB and that's with a stellar talent like Barkley in the same backfield.
Yea I'm not a Jones fan.

What are Barkley’s options now? Sign the franchise tender for 2023 for ~$10 MM or sit out the 2023 season? If he were sit out for 2023, what would happen next? Could the Giants tag him for 2024?

Just about every NFL kicker has the opportunity to significantly impact the game every week (for better or worse), and there are only a handful of them that make big $$ (by NFL standards).
Most NFL running backs rarely play. There are about 150 of them in the league, 1/2 of them account for 10 yards or less of rushing yards per game - and almost never have a significant impact on the game - and there are 100 guys NOT in the league who could likely step in for most of them without the team skipping a beat.

Now, if one compared the salaries of kickers to STARTING running backs (who are very impactful, and not so easily replaced), I would expect a far different result.

Most of the guys who put on NFL uniforms on Sundays are not rocket surgeons.

Word is he'll play for the tagged price then bounce. Sadly he's probably not going to do a lot better in FA next year (but may end up on a better team). It's a win/win for the Giants assuming he plays - they get him for a lower amount and he'll have to play his a$$ off to get big money from a different team. If he gets injured he's f*cked.

he can only bounce if they Giants allow him to, they could tag him again. and if he doesnt play this year, the year does not count as a year of service, so next year he is right back to where he is this year. Why do you think any team is willing to pay him big money, this year or next? Have you not looked and seen what is happening? The Vikes let Delvin Cook walk, and how many offers has he had? Joe Mixon took a major cut in pay just so he had something. RB's are just not getting 'paid' well they are, $10 mil is guaranteed at signing is nothing to sneeze at. Heck by the end of the year, it might look pretty good!!

Cook is a great example. Before Jefferson showed up, he was the offense. He's battled injuries. The Vikes overpaid a much maligned QB and let the RB walk once he showed some mileage.

Mixon is a little bit different. He restructured for more guaranteed money, but less long term stability from what I understand. He's also on a loaded offense.

Barkley is the next Cook contract wise.

I don’t think a team will be willing to pay him more next year and never said that - I said his outcomes ($) are likely worse. But he could potentially be on a better team. An unhappy star in the locker room will kill the Giants.

Sal Palantonio nails it - Giants f*cked up:

“Dan’s right, the NFL running back market is broken Greeny, but the NFL broke the market and they’re going to have to fix it,” Paolantonio said. “So let us put it into perspective right, let’s say Saquon Barkley and the Giants were close as Kimberly said. Maybe about $5 million a year guaranteed money close. That’s two percent, two percent of the of the $225 million salary cap, so you’re basically ruining your team for two percent?”

According to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, the Giants would not up their contract offer of $11 million per year with a guarantee slightly north of $22 million, despite being within $1 million to $2 million of Barkley’s reduced asking price. A figure that Paolantonio believes the organization could have definitely paid given the biger picture of the situation.

“Let’s put it into more perspective, NFL teams collect about $2 million per game in parking revenue. $2 million per game, 17 regular season games, three preseason games, that’s $40 million a year just in parking,” Paolantonio said. “So this is the working definition of pennywise and pound foolish.”

Following the 4 p.m. deadline, Barkley tweeted, “It is what it is.” As the Giants now have an even bigger problem with their running back whose been the engine of their offense. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Barkley will not report to training camp, and ESPN’s Diana Russini even believes there’s a strong chance he could even sit out in Week 1 versus Dallas Cowboys.

“The Giants don’t have a money problem, the Giants now have, as Dan has pointed out, a football problem,” Paolantonio said. “Saquon Barkley is not their running back, he’s their offense, he’s 40% of their offense and you know what Greeny? We’re all right here in the big bad apple, we all came from the big bad apple where things are more expensive and people are paying attention, the Giants are now going to have a public relations problems.”

they will only have a problem if the O does not perform. If the O goes out and scores say 35 vs the Cowboys, SB reports the next day.

Can they replace 40% of their offense with a rando running back? Worth $2mm to find out?

Can we now say with the utmost confidence and sincerity that Franklin ruined Saquon? Franklin could have played him anywhere on the field, but he had to put Saquon on the path to irrelevance.
Speaking of that, check this out. Remember Nick Scott was recruited here as a RB but saw the writing on the wall when Saquon and Miles Sanders were brought in. He then switched to safety. Sanders was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2019 draft and Scott the 7th round of the same draft. Check out their earnings through their first contracts.

Tell me why any sane RB in the league moving forward would bust their nuts during their first contract when they aren't getting rewarded for previous production in the second contract? The second contract is where every other position gets paid paid.

For the second contract Miles did ok and Nick did as well being he's a fringe special teamer.
