I’m just tiptoeing back in here after last night’s loss. I’ve read a few sentiments about canning the WR coach. I don’t disagree with that, but is the same being said about the QB coach? Allar has seemingly very correctable issues that seemed to get worse as the season went on.
I do not feel it is Hagans fault....and no we should not fire the QB coach since we do not have one....we have an analyst Danny O'Brien serving as the QB coach....and maybe that is why our QB's tend to regress instead of developing

It’s a frustrating trend that we always seem to be one position group away. For a while, it was the OL. This year, it was WR. Allar’s play aside, put OSU’s WR3 on this team and they beat ND rather easily.

If Coach Hagans isn't replaced and replaced soon the Head Coach is going to have to explain why. Zero catches for -3 yards in a national semi-final game should never have happened and is embarrassing.

Media member: James, what can you do to get production out of the wide receivers? Is it coaching, recruiting? What needs to change?

Franklin: I’m sure it’s all just a misunderstanding. OBVIOUSLY. o_O

I think its a combination of things;
  1. Lets start with the ingredients you have in the cupboard
    1. Design passing plays that fit your current personnel to make them and your Offense mildly successful
    2. If its running 4 WR sets and throwing screen passes to rack up Completions with low YPC so be it for now-lets do the basics ;)
  2. Hire a well known WR Coach with creds that prospective recruits want to play for and with the perception to get them to the NFL$$$$
    1. OSU's Hartline is probably the best WR Coach in the country-why they get 5*
    2. Need to coach up 3* to become 4* etc.
  3. Over recruit the position as we have struck out the last few years
    1. I do think we have a disadvantage as State College isn't Columbus, Austin, LA etc.
Its a progression and it will not change overnight unfortunately....

But it sure did go from good to bad overnight.

It would never happen, but pay OSU’s WR coach whatever it costs to have him join PSU staff as WR Coach and whatever other title he needs

He hired the WR coach and recruited the WRs. Heck he was supposedly a WR coach himself.

0 catches by WRs.

Yeah, he doing pretty damn well.
I agree that the WR room is a weakness. You think the head coach of a top program isn't doing well because the team has a weakness?

He also hired the new OC everybody loves, the DL coach, OL coach, safeties coach, CB coach, and recruited Tyler Warren and Abdul Carter and those OL and RBs. The team is very good, despite the WR weakness, and the program is in great shape and improving. Franklin is the top man, responsible for all of that.

It does, absolutely.

I think the biggest divide between fans on this message board is between those who accept that we're an A-tier program, and are content with 10-2 being our ceiling, and people who want us to be an S-tier program and expect that we should be beating Ohio State and Michigan closer to 50% of the time instead of almost 0% of the time.

It's one thing to be simply overpowered by a superior opponent, as we were against Michigan the last two times we played them.

It's another thing to play a great game and lose as we did against USC in the 2017 Rose Bowl.

And it's quite another thing to lose because you just can't get your crap together, and you constantly trip over your own feet when the opposition is practically bending over for you. This would be the Ohio State and Notre Dame games from this year as well as many others.
That 2017 Rose Bowl should have been a win. We had a better team, generational RB, pro-level pass catching talent …but lost again. Could not make a single first down when it counted.

Looking back over the decade since, I guess it should not have been a surprise.

I am sure Coach Hagans has a wife and kids. Why pick on him?

Fair point. But nothing above was good enough to win a single big game. 0-3 again this year.

But he lost….again
I heard the someone online suggest he’s in the back half of the top 10 coaches, but every time someone ahead of him drops out of the list, someone else passes him and takes the other guy’s place. He never moves up so he perpetually stays in the back half of the list while others come and go in the spots ahead of him. That about sums it up.

I think a fairer assessment - looking at everything - is the back of the top 20.

Game day coach? Much lower.

I’m done with ever thinking Big Game James will ever coach a team to a win over a highly ranked opponent where Penn State is an underdog. I have just come to expect a bad outcome every time to the point where I think in the future I am not going to waste my time watching such a game. At least with JoePa there was always hope. Did the JoePa teams always come through? No, but they did win enough over higher ranked opponents to know there was a chance. With CJF, No. Not a snowball’s chance at the equator in the midday sun.
